New Southgate kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Splashbacks come off the same slab run as the tops, which means the decision has to be made before fabrication starts. The wall decides, not the brochure.
The new-build work is nearly all upgrading from the developer's laminate without altering the layout, since the units and services are fixed. Small Victorian terraces with 2.4m rear kitchens sit next to newly built regeneration flats with open-plan kitchen-living rooms and an integrated appliance wall. Developer kitchens use 600mm carcasses with a chipboard top glued down, so allow time to break out the old top cleanly without damaging the units the customer wants to keep.
A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. Where a client wants a full-height piece behind the hob, it usually sits in the old chimney recess, and that recess is rarely square top to bottom or side to side, so it has to be templated as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.
On these streets the housing is Victorian terrace, post-war council block and 2010s-2020s regeneration blocks. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Getting stone into the room
Industrial and railway land breaks the road pattern up, so routes are indirect; new blocks have loading bays and lifts, while the older terraces have no drives and tight permit parking near the station.
A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in New Southgate
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is New Southgate on your patch?
Yes. New Southgate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N11. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop splashbacks & upstands in New Southgate be any different from anywhere else?
A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. A 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer where the plaster bows, because it rides what a tall panel exposes. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. Developer kitchens use 600mm carcasses with a chipboard top glued down, so allow time to break out the old top cleanly without damaging the units the customer wants to keep.
How would you get a worktop into a property in New Southgate?
Industrial and railway land breaks the road pattern up, so routes are indirect; new blocks have loading bays and lifts, while the older terraces have no drives and tight permit parking near the station. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Joint positions follow from that.
Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in New Southgate?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to New Southgate?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Decided before fabrication, not after.
