Peckham kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Georgian terrace pocketsVictorian bay-front terrace1960s and 1970s estate2010s conversion of light industrial

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Proven on the bench, then loaded.

The Bellenden-side Victorian terraces are extension country - kitchen moved into a rear infill with a 3m run against the flank and a small island or peninsula - while the estate flats and warehouse-style conversions to the north stay galley-shaped with a single run and a tall bank.

Half these jobs land mid-build with the extension still drying out, so template late and check the plaster is on before you cut.

The flat entrance door and the internal doorways are usually tighter than the communal stairs, which is the opposite of what most people assume. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. Settled on the drawing, cut once.

On these streets the housing is Georgian terrace pockets, Victorian bay-front terrace, 1960s and 1970s estate and 2010s conversion of light industrial. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Peckham

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Peckham?

Yes. Peckham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE15. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Southwark. Enforcement zones rarely accept a trade van unloading stone as an exemption, so this gets sorted before the date is confirmed rather than argued about afterwards. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Peckham change how worktop fabrication works?

The flat entrance door and the internal doorways are usually tighter than the communal stairs, which is the opposite of what most people assume. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Half these jobs land mid-build with the extension still drying out, so template late and check the plaster is on before you cut.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Peckham?

Tight terraced streets with permit bays, a lot of skips and builders' vans competing for kerb, and rear access rarely usable because gardens back onto other gardens rather than a lane. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Is Peckham really a worktop fabrication area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch.

Why do two Peckham kitchens the same size price differently?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Machined to the real line. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
