Stone bar tops in Perivale
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Perivale kitchens
The buildings and streets around Perivale
The honest way to talk about stone bar top work in Perivale is to talk about kitchens first and worktops second, because one sets the terms for the other. 1930s semis with rear kitchens and side additions, plus apartments in the converted Deco factory buildings where the kitchen is a straight run with a peninsula in an open-plan space. If you would rather someone just came and looked, that is the design and quotation visit, and it costs nothing in Perivale or anywhere else.
Services coming up through a floor slab mean the island cannot move to suit the stone, so the stone is cut to suit the island. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. The underside of the nose is polished because it is looked at.
Windows are large industrial openings with deep sills, and a run finishing at one meets a reveal a full brick deep. That changes the order of the job: the services are set out first, the frame is built round them, and the stone is machined to suit what is already there. The back of a freestanding bar is finished like the front.
The mix here is 1930s semi, Art Deco industrial conversion, interwar terrace and postwar infill. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Perivale is its own job
When people ask what is different about a worktop job in Perivale, the answer is in the route and in the walls. Western Avenue runs straight through with limited turnings, so overshooting means a long loop. Residential streets have drives, but the converted-factory apartments need lift booking and residents' permits. The Deco conversions have deep window reveals and non-standard ceiling heights, so set the splashback height off the actual reveal rather than the architect's drawing. Whatever the building does to a straight line, it is measured on the template and drawn before anything is cut.
The work
What bar tops involves
A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. On the day the frame is checked and packed, the support goes in, and the stone is set and sealed last, which is why a bar is booked as a day rather than as a delivery. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.
The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Anything beyond roughly 300mm of unsupported projection gets flat steel let into the frame or corbels beneath it, and which of the two is a decision about how the piece reads from a seat. The runs are long, so the top behaves as a beam and the support is set out along the whole front rather than at the ends. Drawn from the stool and worked back to the wall.

The money
What it costs in Perivale
A bar is quoted as joinery and stone together, so the frame, the support and the top each appear on the sheet instead of being folded into a rate for the surface. It behaves like half an island on the yield and all of one on the edge profile. If you are holding two quotes, the £110 to £550 supply rate is the part they will agree on. Compare the join count, the edge profile and what the fitting line covers. You see what the projection costs before agreeing to it.

1930s and inter-war semis
The carry, and what it rules out
The lift is only part of the route, and the corridor from the lobby to the flat door often holds a tighter turn than the car does. A bar is usually one of the last pieces to go in, so the route has to still be clear on a day when the rest of the room is finished. Stools and back shelving come in after the stone is down.

What Perivale asks for
We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Perivale in the housing figures
In Perivale, most of the stock dates from the building boom of the twenties and thirties. The kitchens are compact, so the fixed lines outweigh the stone. Rooms of that vintage are small, so the bar replaces a table rather than joining one, and the stool count comes off the floor space. What sits under the nose is half the specification.

Getting stone into a Perivale kitchen
Western Avenue runs straight through with limited turnings, so overshooting means a long loop. Residential streets have drives, but the converted-factory apartments need lift booking and residents' permits.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Perivale
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Perivale far enough out to be a problem for you?
Yes. Perivale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB6. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Ealing. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Fitting a bar top is slower than carrying one. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.
Does the housing in Perivale change how bar tops works?
Services run on the surface in these buildings, so conduit and pipework cross the wall behind the units and stand proud of it. This is the stock where a bar is most often a working one, with a glasswasher, a waste, a drip tray and beer lines all needing to be planned under the top before the piece is drawn. Where the walls give nothing, the bar stands on its own. Where the sill lands inside the height an upstand would occupy there is no upstand, and the stone either dies into the reveal or stops short of it. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The stone is cut to the obstruction as found.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Perivale?
A rated load sounds ample until three lengths of granite and two fitters are standing on it, so the stone goes up one piece at a time. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A bar top is heavier than it looks because the apron is solid. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The frame is checked before anything comes off the van.
Is bar tops what Perivale is known for?
No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A serving counter and a bar are one piece under two loads. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. The steel is priced with the bar, not after it.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
The joint where a peninsula meets the main run wants a gable directly under it, and where the units do not offer one, steel goes in to carry that joint instead. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Stools need floor as well as knee room, and both are drawn. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Perivale?
Casement handles and stays swing down into the space above the worktop, so the clearance that counts is the one measured with the window open. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. What carries the overhang is fixed to structure, not to lining. Send the bar layout with the glasswasher, sink and waste positions marked, and tell us the route from where a van can stand to the room. A landlord with several similar flats usually wants one specification repeated, so the material, the edge detail and the upstand height are recorded and reused rather than rechosen each time. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Stools change; the nose does not.
Can you get a full-length top into an upstairs kitchen in Perivale?
Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. What decides it is not the width of the stairwell but the length of piece that can be turned in it. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Blankets on the walls and a board on the floor go in before the first piece, because a scratched car becomes a bill from the managing agent long after the kitchen is finished. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Where the way in is awkward the bar is drawn in tiers.
What is actually on a Perivale worktop quote?
Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. A corbel never lands where a knee goes.
What if the base units are out of level?
Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. A counter fixed back to lightweight framing takes a sideways push as well as a downward load, and framing built for neither gets noggins let into it first. The bar is packed level off the frame, not off the floor.
How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?
A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. A breakfast bar on the outer side is an overhang like any other, and the support under it is sized for people leaning on the end rather than for the weight of the stone alone. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. The bar length answers to the seats, not to the wall behind it.
