Shad Thames kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Services coming up through a floor slab mean the island cannot move to suit the stone, so the stone is cut to suit the island. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.
Almost entirely converted warehouse apartments - split-level or double-height, with the kitchen run pinned along one wall between structural brick piers and cast-iron columns, so runs get broken into 1.8m to 2.4m sections rather than one continuous sweep, and breakfast bars replace full islands where the floor plate is narrow.
The street itself is cobbled and shaded by the overhead gantry bridges with no room to park a van beside the door; lifts are small original goods lifts or tight passenger cars, so oversized pieces have to be planned to fit the car diagonally or go up the stairs on edge.
Steel columns and downstands land where the frame put them, which is frequently in the middle of what would otherwise be a clean run. Where brickwork bows enough that a full-depth piece cannot go back tight, the units move forward and the front overhang changes. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
The mix here is 1880s tea and spice warehouse, 1980s Butlers Wharf conversion and 1990s riverside block. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. The strip-out is planned around it.

The building, and what it does to the job
Measure the lift and the stair turn before you cut anything - a slab that fits the kitchen but not the lift is a wasted day here.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop templating, worktop fabrication and worktop installation do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Getting stone into a Shad Thames kitchen
The street itself is cobbled and shaded by the overhead gantry bridges with no room to park a van beside the door; lifts are small original goods lifts or tight passenger cars, so oversized pieces have to be planned to fit the car diagonally or go up the stairs on edge.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Shad Thames
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Shad Thames, or just list it?
Yes. Shad Thames is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE1. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Southwark. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Shad Thames?
The goods lift is generous and the flat entrance often is not, so the tightest point on the route is inside the flat rather than in the building. Converted warehouses put the kitchen against original brick or blockwork that has never been made flat, so scribes of 15 to 20mm along a run are normal and every piece is templated to the wall exactly as it is rather than to a drawing. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Measure the lift and the stair turn before you cut anything - a slab that fits the kitchen but not the lift is a wasted day here.
Is access a problem in Shad Thames?
The street itself is cobbled and shaded by the overhead gantry bridges with no room to park a van beside the door; lifts are small original goods lifts or tight passenger cars, so oversized pieces have to be planned to fit the car diagonally or go up the stairs on edge. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Do you get much worktop replacement work in Shad Thames?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Shad Thames?
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. The laminate has been covering it up. Book the goods lift and loading bay for the day, clear a straight route through the open plan, and have a plumber on hand for the island services coming up through the floor. Where the owner is not local, the decisions happen remotely, so photographs and a clear itemised drawing carry more weight than a showroom visit ever would. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Plumber either side of us.
