West Harrow kitchens

The buildings and streets around West Harrow

Edwardian terrace1920s semismall 1960s block

There is a reason we ask about the building before we talk about stone, and reception counter work in West Harrow is a good illustration of it. Edwardian and early interwar terraces with a rear kitchen in the back addition, and gardens deep enough that a modest single-storey extension is common but a full-width one is not. Finished kitchens run about 3.5m along one wall with a short peninsula, and the utility usually ends up under the stairs or in a lean-to. Nothing is payable until the template is taken, so finding out where you stand costs you nothing at all.

A serving hatch through to the dining room is common, and closing one up leaves a panel of newer wall exactly where the run passes. What decides the piece sizes is the lobby and the way into it, since a counter top runs longer than a kitchen worktop and has no cabinet run to break it up. A counter is measured in the lobby it will stand in.

Rear windows are wide and low with a deep tiled cill, and that cill decides how tall the upstand behind the sink can be. Districts built out between the wars have parades of their own, and the practices in them run to a counter with a waiting room behind it and a filing run under the shelf. Old shopfronts were never sized for a three-metre top.

The buildings themselves are mostly Edwardian terrace, 1920s semi and small 1960s block. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why West Harrow is its own job

What we want to establish about your kitchen in West Harrow is how we get to it and what we will be fixing against. Terraced streets with a few dropped kerbs and mostly free but crowded parking, and side alleys of around 750mm shared with the neighbour, which usually works for a slab on edge if the gate is removable. The shared side alley is the deciding factor on these terraces, so confirm the gate width and whether the neighbour's fence can be dropped before promising a single-piece top. Somebody comes out to West Harrow, looks at all of it, and puts a number on it before you decide anything.

The work

What reception counters involves

Reception counter work covers the stone only: the upper counter, the transaction shelf, the return between them and any upstand behind, all made to a carcass a joiner has already built and fixed. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.

Counter work starts where the joinery finishes: a carcass built by another trade, and a stone top made to what that carcass actually turned out to be. The templater attends once the carcass is fixed and level, and records the carcass rather than the room around it. A bay window behind the desk backlights the whole counter, so the polish on the front edge and the seams get more attention than usual. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money

What it costs in West Harrow

The fitting line answers to the lobby and to the hours we are allowed in it, which is why a counter fitted at night costs more than the same counter fitted in the day. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. The catalogue starts at £110 per square metre at the plainest end and reaches £550 at the top, supply only, with the same fabrication work sitting behind either choice. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

West Harrow in the housing figures

On the West Harrow streets we cover, hardly any of it is newly built, so what the old surface was fixed to matters more than what goes on top. Several desks across one estate come off a single slab run, or they will never read as a set. What the public leans on is specified for being leaned on.

The shape of the run

Where a run finishes hard against a wall the last few millimetres are scribed, and where it finishes in open floor it is cut square and polished, which is two different jobs on one length. Where the front is curved the top is cut on a waterjet, and the carcass has to be built to the same radius rather than close to it. The public side and the staff side take different details.

What West Harrow asks for

Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

Access

Getting stone into a West Harrow kitchen

Terraced streets with a few dropped kerbs and mostly free but crowded parking, and side alleys of around 750mm shared with the neighbour, which usually works for a slab on edge if the gate is removable.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in West Harrow

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is West Harrow on your patch?

Yes. West Harrow is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA1, HA2. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in West Harrow change how reception counters works?

These went up as handed pairs, so in one house of the two the kitchen sits against the party wall and in the other it takes the alley side, and only one of them has an outside wall to work with. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. The service road at the back is often the real way in. The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. What is out of true gets measured, not talked around.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in West Harrow?

Grass and gravel will not take a loaded trolley, so a boarded track gets laid from the gate to the door before the first piece moves. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The upper counter is the piece that has to make the turn. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space.

Is reception counters what West Harrow is known for?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. One visit, because a lobby cannot be closed twice. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. One counter, one drawing, and no second bite at it.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

A doorway partway along one wall breaks that side into two separate pieces, and two short pieces cost more between them than the single long one they replace. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Nothing is drawn square that the carcass did not build square. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in West Harrow?

A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. A desk in a re-let space is specified for the next occupier too.

Will you fit stone onto units that are not level?

An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. Packing takes up small variation. It is not there to hide something that belongs in the units. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. Nothing on a counter is corrected with sealant.

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. The sink, tap and hob have to be physically in the room at the template, not merely ordered, because the cut-out is machined to the item itself. Handles on opposing runs meet in the middle of the aisle, so a deep edge profile specified on both sides takes width out of the standing space twice over. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The counter shape follows the queue first and the slab second.

Can you get a full-length top into an upstairs kitchen in West Harrow?

Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. A step up to a patio or a raised threshold at the back door means the piece is lifted rather than rolled, and that is where the crew size gets decided. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Trestles go up in the lobby before anything is unwrapped.

Do most West Harrow kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. A serving hatch through to the dining room was standard, and where it has been blocked up the patch sits on a different plane to the wall either side of it. The carcass is built around a chimney breast or into a bay, so the counter is drawn to a shape the joiner had to invent rather than to a rectangle, and the return between the upper counter and the transaction shelf rarely nests neatly against the long piece. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anybody draws it.
