Stone bar tops in Wimbledon Chase
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Wimbledon Chase kitchens
The buildings and streets around Wimbledon Chase
People often assume stone bar top work in Wimbledon Chase is a straight swap, and sometimes it is, though the kitchen usually has an opinion about that. A good proportion of bungalows here mean single-level kitchens where the whole room can be worked at once, wide U-shapes with a run on three walls and no upstairs to negotiate. The semis follow the standard rear kitchen plan with the pantry recess absorbed into a taller unit run. The tape measure decides it, not the description above, and not anything anybody says over the telephone.
The window over the sink sits at about worktop height, so the run is set out around the sill and the reveal rather than under them. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. Nothing about a bar top is designed around a wall.
Where the roof has been converted there is usually a steel over the kitchen that went in after the walls, and the run beneath it is worth checking for square. A bar here usually appears at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, where it is read from both sides and both sides have to be finished to the same standard. The back of a freestanding bar is finished like the front.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1930s semi, Interwar bungalow and 1950s detached. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Wimbledon Chase is its own job
We measure and fit in Wimbledon Chase often enough to know what to ask about before anyone agrees a date. Driveways and dropped kerbs are common so the van gets close to the door, and single-storey properties mean the carry is level from van to room. The constraint is usually a low porch canopy or a narrow front door reveal rather than stairs. Bungalow ceilings are low, which means tall wall units come down close to the top, check hob clearance and upstand height before cutting the splashback panel. Have a look at the itemised quote and you can see what the building is costing and what the stone is costing.
The work
What bar tops involves
The work is quoted as its own item rather than as extra worktop metreage, because a bar carries a load a kitchen run never sees and the support beneath it is a real cost. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You end up with a front edge that takes people leaning on it all evening without the top shifting, because the load was worked out before the stone was ordered.
The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Fixings passing through a frame into a party wall or anything structural are agreed with whoever owns that wall before a hole is drilled. A side passage usually lets a full length reach the room, so the piece is sized by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the door. Frame checked, steel in, stone down.

The money
What it costs in Wimbledon Chase
The seating count drives the length, the length drives the break, and a break placed clear of every stool is what the piece is really being priced for. A U is three runs and two corners, so the join count and the edge metreage both rise faster than the floor area does. For a rough sense of the material, £110 to £550 per square metre supply only is the honest span. Treat it as one line of a quote that will carry several more. A bar is quoted as a bar, not as extra worktop.

1930s and inter-war semis
The carry, and what it rules out
Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. The van takes the offcut away as well, and a bar with a sink in it produces one worth keeping rather than skipping. Trestles outside beat balancing a top on a half-built frame.

What Wimbledon Chase asks for
Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop installation, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop replacement. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.
1930s and inter-war semis
The shape of the run
The advantage of a U is that every join can be put over a gable in a corner, so nothing lands in the middle of a clear length. How many stools the shape will genuinely take comes off the clear length between the returns rather than off the length of the top. The bar length answers to the seats, not to the wall behind it.

Getting stone into a Wimbledon Chase kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Wimbledon Chase far enough out to be a problem for you?
Yes. Wimbledon Chase is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW20, SW19. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The offcut from a bar sink leaves in the van. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.
Does the housing in Wimbledon Chase change how bar tops works?
The kitchen sits at the back with a door to the garden and a window over the sink, and both are on the wall the run wants. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. Where the walls give nothing, the bar stands on its own. The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The support plan is drawn at the same time as the cut-out.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Wimbledon Chase?
The front door is often the cheapest hundred millimetres on the route, because a door lifted off its hinges gives back the width its own thickness was taking. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A polished front edge is protected from the tail lift to the frame. The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A suspension is booked for the fitting day, not the delivery hour.
Is Wimbledon Chase really a bar tops area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop replacement. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The evening use is what the piece is sized for. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Bars are quoted as their own item, never as extra metreage.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
The short run at the head of a U usually sits under a window, so that piece is scribed on three sides at once and has nowhere left to be pushed back to. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A deep apron takes knee room away quietly. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Wimbledon Chase?
An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A bar top will not correct a frame that is out of true. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. The decision usually gets made standing in the room rather than at a desk, which is why a slab is worth viewing whole instead of choosing from a sample card. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A chipped front edge can be dressed in place.
Can you machine drainer grooves into the stone?
A groove set is its own item on the quote rather than something rolled in with the sink cut-out. A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. The old larder leaves behind a thick cold shelf and a vent brick through the outer wall, and both have to go before that wall reads flat. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. The underside of the nose is polished because it is looked at.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. The floor is a solid slab with a screed over it, which is stable underfoot and rarely flat across a long run. The side passage means a full length can generally reach the room whole, so the break count answers to the slab and to the frame rather than to the front door. A long counter is a beam before it is a surface.
What if something breaks during the fit?
Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. A dropped pan years later is a different question, and stone is remade rather than filled either way. An inward-opening door swinging back against the wall leaves less clear opening than the frame measures, and a storm porch in front of it is tighter again. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Nothing is leaned on a stud wall while it waits to be fitted.
How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?
A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. A U puts the sink in one leg, the hob in another and any drainer grooves in whatever is left, which spreads the cut-outs about but does not reduce the machining time. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Support follows the seating plan along the whole nose.
