Stone bar tops in Cannon Hill
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Cannon Hill kitchens
The buildings and streets around Cannon Hill
Nearly all the bar tops we quote in Cannon Hill start with the same conversation about what is already in the kitchen and what is staying. Houses backing onto the common have kitchens reorientated to face the green, often with a peninsula under a rear window rather than a full extension. The 1960s low-rise blocks have compact fitted kitchens where a single 2.4m run and a return is the whole job. It is not your job to know which one it is. Ask for the survey and the measurements will tell us both.
Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. The stone follows the frame, and the frame follows the stools.
The kitchen is at the front or the back depending on the plan, and which it is decides whether there is a rear door on the route at all. Rooms are small, so the projection is kept to what the floor space will give rather than to what the stone would happily allow. The riser gets notched around, not built away from.
On these streets the housing is 1930s semi, 1960s low-rise flat and Postwar detached. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Cannon Hill is its own job
There is nothing clever about a fit in Cannon Hill going smoothly, only a survey that asked the right things beforehand. Roads bordering the common are quiet but have limited turning space and grass verges that a loaded van will sink into after rain. Flats in the low-rise blocks are reached by external stairs with an open landing, which makes wind a genuine handling issue with a slab on edge. In the flats the window sill often sits lower than the worktop line, so a sill-height check has to happen before the sink run is cut. All of it is priced before you commit to anything, and the itemised quote shows exactly where the awkward parts of the job are and what they add.
The work
What bar tops involves
The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. Where the front edge reaches past what the frame will carry, flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face or corbels are fixed to structure, and which of the two is agreed with you rather than decided on the morning. You are left with a counter level along its own length whatever the floor beneath it is doing, which is what stops a glass wandering across the surface.
The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Fixings passing through a frame into a party wall or anything structural are agreed with whoever owns that wall before a hole is drilled. Partitions are lightweight, so noggins go in before any bracket is offered up to a wall. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money
What it costs in Cannon Hill
Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The catalogue starts at £110 per square metre at the plainest end and reaches £550 at the top, supply only, with the same fabrication work sitting behind either choice. You see what the projection costs before agreeing to it.

What Cannon Hill asks for
This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.
1930s and inter-war semis
The shape of the run
A doorway partway along one wall breaks that side into two separate pieces, and two short pieces cost more between them than the single long one they replace. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. The bar is set out from the seat and worked back to the units.

Cannon Hill in the housing figures
In Cannon Hill, bay-fronted inter-war housing sets the pattern. Where the frame is site-built rather than a kitchen carcass, its plumb and its fixings are checked before the top is measured. A seat never sits above a seam.

Getting stone into a Cannon Hill kitchen
Roads bordering the common are quiet but have limited turning space and grass verges that a loaded van will sink into after rain. Flats in the low-rise blocks are reached by external stairs with an open landing, which makes wind a genuine handling issue with a slab on edge.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Cannon Hill
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Cannon Hill on your patch?
Yes. Cannon Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW20. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A bar fit is a day, not a drop. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Is there anything about Cannon Hill buildings that catches bar tops out?
These were built on a solid ground floor slab, so nothing bounces and nothing can be packed down, only up. A bar in this stock is nearly always a short breakfast counter on the end of a run, and the end is exactly the point where the load lands with the least underneath it. Two tiers where a single piece will not reach. A cill projecting forward of the plaster line pushes the back edge out, and the units then stand off the wall by that amount for the whole length. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Fixings go into timber that was put there for them.
What do you check about the route into a Cannon Hill property?
Every flight adds a set of handling movements, and handling is where stone gets damaged, so a fourth-floor walk-up is priced by the flight rather than by the metre. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A polished front edge is protected from the tail lift to the frame. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Steel and corbels are unloaded before the stone is.
Does Cannon Hill actually ask for bar tops?
Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A bar is the piece most likely to be added after the kitchen. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Frames get opened up again when the support was left out.
Why do two Cannon Hill kitchens the same size price differently?
Handles on opposing runs meet in the middle of the aisle, so a deep edge profile specified on both sides takes width out of the standing space twice over. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A foot rail is planned with the frame, not bolted on later. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Where the sill lands inside the height an upstand would occupy there is no upstand, and the stone either dies into the reveal or stops short of it. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. The knee space is measured before the bracket is specified. Tell us what the end of the run is built off, send the length and projection you want, and confirm whether there is rear access into the kitchen. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The support is specified for the next occupant as well.
Why would a Cannon Hill kitchen need a join at all?
Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. What the shape gives in length it takes back in support.
What maintenance does a worktop need in a Cannon Hill kitchen?
Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. A boiler in a cupboard on the kitchen wall is normal in this stock, and its position is fixed by its flue. Partitions are frequently lightweight, so anything fixed back to a wall gets noggins let into the framing before a bracket is offered up to it, and a fixing into plasterboard alone is not an option on a piece people push against. Scribed at the back and free at the front.
Is taking the old top off part of the job?
What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. The units are untouched. Only the top of them changes. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. The bar top waits on the van until the frame is level.
The floor in my Cannon Hill kitchen slopes. Does that matter?
Levelling belongs in the carcasses, on their own legs and packers. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. Level is checked at the template, which is the point of measuring in the room rather than off a drawing. Casement handles and stays swing down into the space above the worktop, so the clearance that counts is the one measured with the window open. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. Where the wall is bowed the rear rail takes it up.
