Worktop installation in Balham
Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.
Balham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. One visit, our own installers.
Whole-house terraces get the standard rear extension with a run and an island of about 2.2m, but a large share of the stock is converted flats where the kitchen has been fitted into a former reception room and is open to the living space. The 1930s mansion blocks have original narrow galleys that owners keep and simply re-top.
The High Road is a bus corridor with no standing, and the residential streets either side are permit-controlled with heavy parking pressure.
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. The day is planned backwards from the hall. That is the shape of the day.
What turns up on the job sheets is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, 1930s art deco mansion block and Flat conversion. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Getting stone into the room
Converted flats above ground level are reached by a communal stair with a half-landing and often a fire door at the top that has to come off its hinges.
A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.

The building, and what it does to the job
In the mansion blocks the original galley walls are solid brick and out of plumb top to bottom, so the upstand needs scribing separately from the worktop back edge.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Balham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Balham on your patch?
Yes. Balham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW12. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Balham be any different from anywhere else?
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. The day is planned backwards from the hall. That is the shape of the day. In the mansion blocks the original galley walls are solid brick and out of plumb top to bottom, so the upstand needs scribing separately from the worktop back edge.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Balham?
The High Road is a bus corridor with no standing, and the residential streets either side are permit-controlled with heavy parking pressure. Converted flats above ground level are reached by a communal stair with a half-landing and often a fire door at the top that has to come off its hinges. Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. None of it is worked out on the doorstep. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is worktop installation common in Balham?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Balham?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
