Walls look modern and are not: block or breeze with a skim that has been patched over decades, so dry-laying and scribing still apply. Access is generally through the front door and a short straight hall into the kitchen, which is a good deal kinder than a Victorian terrace, though rear access through a back garden or shared path is often the better route if it exists. The slow parts are slow for a reason. Plenty of replacement-only work here, so the critical measurement is the existing carcass depth — older units are often 570mm rather than 600mm and the overhang has to be set accordingly.

Easy suburban access on the residential roads with driveways and dropped kerbs; harder on the High Street itself and the flats above the parade, where there is no parking and stairs to the first floor. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. None of it is worked out on the doorstep. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. It is the slow part of the day and it should be. Unlock any rear or shared path gate and clear both the hall and the back approach so we can choose the better route on the day. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
