A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. Where the van stands sets how the day runs. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

The rear extension is frequently original rather than added, which means it is solidly built and just as far out of square as the rest of the house. The day is planned backwards from the hall. A floor that falls twenty millimetres is packed out first. A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Wider halls make the carry noticeably easier, and that alone can remove a join that a narrower terrace would have forced into the run. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. The building moved decades ago and the fit allows for it.

Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. Where the garden is level and the back door is wide the pieces get staged outside on trestles and brought in one at a time as the fitters are ready for them. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. Every re-grip is a chance to chip a piece, so they are planned out.
