The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. The last hundred millimetres decide how it reads.

Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. Protection comes up only when the last piece is inside.

The sink, tap and hob have to be physically in the room at the template, not merely ordered, because the cut-out is machined to the item itself. A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. The offcut taken out of the middle for a hob is a large usable piece, and it is worth deciding early whether it becomes an upstand or goes in the skip. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The step between rooms is packed out first.
