Gallions Reach kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

2000s new-build houserecent apartment block1990s estate housing

Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. The route is walked before the first lift.

New-build houses here have a kitchen-diner across the rear with a 3m run plus a 1.5m island, generally already square and level, which makes the templating straightforward. Apartments have small single-wall kitchens with the washing machine inside the run.

Modern square rooms make this the closest thing to a drawing-office job in the borough, though the island's overhang still needs proper brackets, not just adhesive. Wide modern roads, retail park loading and driveways on most houses mean a full-size van can park at the door with no permit issues. Newer blocks have modern lifts of a usable size, but gated parking courts need a resident to let the van in.

Estate roads are narrow with parking courts behind the blocks, so the carry crosses open ground rather than a pavement. If the diagonal is short we either split the run with a planned join or, on lower floors, carry up the stairwell, which needs the half-landing turn checking as well. The slow parts are slow for a reason.

On these streets the housing is 2000s new-build house, recent apartment block and 1990s estate housing. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop templating and worktop design & quotation.

Getting stone into the room

Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. We would rather ask than guess.

The building, and what it does to the job

The service lift's internal diagonal, which is often shorter than the longest run and forces the join position before we start.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Gallions Reach

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Gallions Reach?

Yes. Gallions Reach is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E6, E16. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Gallions Reach change how worktop installation works?

A gated development controls when a van gets in, where it can stand and for how long, and none of that gets decided on the morning. If the diagonal is short we either split the run with a planned join or, on lower floors, carry up the stairwell, which needs the half-landing turn checking as well. That is the shape of the day. Modern square rooms make this the closest thing to a drawing-office job in the borough, though the island's overhang still needs proper brackets, not just adhesive.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Gallions Reach?

Wide modern roads, retail park loading and driveways on most houses mean a full-size van can park at the door with no permit issues. Newer blocks have modern lifts of a usable size, but gated parking courts need a resident to let the van in. The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. None of it is worked out on the doorstep. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop installation the job you do most in Gallions Reach?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop design & quotation. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.

Why do two Gallions Reach kitchens the same size price differently?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Book the service lift and loading bay with the building manager for the whole fitting window, and have the fob or key for lift override ready. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
