Half of what we get asked about stone bar top work in Monument could be answered by a tape measure and ten minutes in the room in question. The flats here are small city apartments in converted upper floors, and kitchens are typically an L of 2.4-3m with a compact appliance run, often opening straight into the living space. Because the buildings are narrow and deep, the kitchen usually has no window and sits against an internal wall, so a stone splashback and a matching windowsill-height upstand is the standard finish. On the day the frame is checked and packed, the support goes in, and the stone is set and sealed last, which is why a bar is booked as a day rather than as a delivery. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.

The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Where the counter has two levels the spine between them is built first, and the two tops are drawn as a pair so the front edges stay parallel down the length. What it costs in Monument

Material choice moves the figure less than the detail does, and on a bar the detail means the apron, the radius and whatever sits under the front edge. An L has a return, and a return rarely nests neatly on a slab, so the yield question arrives earlier than it does on a straight run. The supply band of £110 to £550 per square metre is known the day you choose a colour. What is not known until the template is the piece count and the number of cut-outs. A bar is quoted as a bar, not as extra worktop.

Butt-jointing over the gable puts the seam a few hundred millimetres back from the corner, below the eye line instead of straight across it. A separate bar in the same room still takes its services from the same run, so the waste, the socket and the water are set out with the kitchen even though the joinery is not. The bar is set out from the seat and worked back to the units.

Spindles and a newel cap stand proud of the string, so the usable width on a turn is measured to the handrail rather than to the wall behind it. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. The route is measured to the deepest part of the piece.

Are you set up to work in Monument, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Monument is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC3R. It is worked on our City of London run, along with the rest of the Square Mile. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A short unload is still a long fit on a bar. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.

Is there anything about Monument buildings that catches bar tops out?

Sash windows sit in deep reveals with a working box behind the lining, so a run dying into one has to clear more than the plaster. A bar in one of these flats is generally furniture in a reception room rather than part of a kitchen, so it is drawn alongside the skirting and the cornice and built as joinery with the stone as its final element. Blockwork holds a fixing and plasterboard does not. Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.

What do you check about the route into a Monument property?

The top step is rarely the end of it, because a door swinging out onto the landing has to be held back before a piece can come off the flight. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Stools and back shelving come in after the stone is down. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Permits are sorted before a corbel is drilled.

Does Monument actually ask for bar tops?

Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop templating. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. A managed portfolio tends to repeat one specification across every flat, which keeps later repairs and replacements simple to order. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. One detail across several rooms keeps the fixings the same. Damage in a let flat is settled as a deposit deduction, so a surface that can be repaired in place is worth more than one that has to be replaced whole. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. The evening use is what the piece is sized for.

Why do two Monument kitchens the same size price differently?

Corner sinks and corner hobs sit exactly where the joint wants to be, so on an L the cut-out positions get settled before the join positions do. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A foot rail is planned with the frame, not bolted on later. What has to be finished before you can template?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it. Confirm the working hours the block allows and the lift booking, and send the frame drawing with the finished height and the projection marked on it. Whoever manages the block controls the lift booking, the bin store and the visitor parking, and none of that sits in the gift of the household whose kitchen it is. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A quote for a bar names who is providing the frame.

Is a drainer groove worth it in a small Monument kitchen?

A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. The communal stair is stone with a cast iron balustrade, and the winders leave very little room to turn a long piece. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. The nose is designed before the colour is.

Can a Monument worktop be done in one piece?

A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. One leg of an L is nearly always the working run and the other little more than a landing space, but both are templated, cut and edged to the same standard. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. What the shape gives in length it takes back in support.

What if the units in a Monument kitchen have moved since they went in?

If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. A sloping floor is a problem for the stools, not the top.

What is the difference between an upstand and a splashback?

If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. The flats are stacked identically, so the kitchen above sits directly over this one and its waste passes through the same boxing. Thick walls and deep skirtings stand the frame off the plaster, and the top is drawn to cover that gap rather than the frame being forced back into it. A trade bar and a home bar are different pieces of work.
