Worktop templating in Roxbourne
A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.
Roxbourne kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. The room as it is, to the millimetre.
Repetitive interwar estate housing where every kitchen is effectively the same box, which makes it good like-for-like replacement territory: a 2.7m run with a return of about 1.2m and a back door in the corner.
Extensions are less common than in the wealthier Harrow districts, so footprints usually stay as built. Uniform stock means a template from one house nearly fits the next, but never assume it, because 1930s builders varied the back-door corner by an inch or two.
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Unit height is the other issue: legs sit on an uneven screed or hard concrete with no give, so the laser reads the top of every carcass rather than assuming they share a height. Two to three hours, once the units are in.
On these streets the housing is 1930s estate semi, interwar terrace and 1960s maisonette block. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
Getting stone into the room
Uniform estate roads with drives on many houses and consistent side gate widths, which makes access predictable; maisonette blocks need a shared external stair and a two-person lift up.
Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. Two hours is the realistic figure.

What gets asked for here
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop replacement. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
True everywhere, stated once
A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Is Roxbourne on your patch?
Yes. Roxbourne is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA2. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop templating in Roxbourne be any different from anywhere else?
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Unit height is the other issue: legs sit on an uneven screed or hard concrete with no give, so the laser reads the top of every carcass rather than assuming they share a height. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Uniform stock means a template from one house nearly fits the next, but never assume it, because 1930s builders varied the back-door corner by an inch or two.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Roxbourne?
Uniform estate roads with drives on many houses and consistent side gate widths, which makes access predictable; maisonette blocks need a shared external stair and a two-person lift up. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is worktop templating common in Roxbourne?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Appliances on site, not on order. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Roxbourne?
A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Plotted, not estimated. Every base unit fixed to the wall, packed and levelled with the laser, and any dry-lining or patching completed - the template reads the wall face it is given, so that has to be the finished face. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
