Worktop installation in South Croydon

Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian villaEdwardian terracevilla converted to flats1930s semi

These are the multi-piece jobs, where vein direction across a join matters as much as the join itself. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.

Along the Brighton Road corridor the large villas are mostly flats with kitchens fitted into former reception rooms, so runs are long but interrupted by chimney breasts and cornice returns. Up the hill the 1930s semis are conventional family kitchens with rear extensions.

Converted flats have communal front doors and original staircases. Brighton Road is a main bus route with limited stopping, and the side roads run steeply uphill with permit bays.

Original walls are thick, lime-plastered and rarely straight, which makes dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the fitting day. Access through the property is usually the simplest of any archetype, with wide doors and generous rooms, so we can often carry a full-length piece straight in without a planned join. That is the shape of the day.

The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, villa converted to flats and 1930s semi. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Fitting a run against a chimney breast in a converted reception room means two returns and two scribes on one piece, which takes longer to template than a straight wall twice the length.

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. It is the slow part of the day and it should be.

The carry distance from the van to the door, which is often long enough that the piece has to be rested and re-gripped part way.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop templating. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Access

Getting stone into a South Croydon kitchen

Brighton Road is a main bus route with limited stopping, and the side roads run steeply uphill with permit bays. Converted flats have communal front doors and original staircases.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

3–7 working days

From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Questions

Worktop installation in South Croydon

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover South Croydon?

Yes. South Croydon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR2. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in South Croydon change how worktop installation works?

Original walls are thick, lime-plastered and rarely straight, which makes dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the fitting day. How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in South Croydon?

Brighton Road is a main bus route with limited stopping, and the side roads run steeply uphill with permit bays. Converted flats have communal front doors and original staircases. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you do much worktop installation around South Croydon?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. Sealed before we leave.

Why do two South Croydon kitchens the same size price differently?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Give us the hardest, shortest approach to the door you can, clear of parked cars, and warn us of any soft ground, steps or gravel on the route. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Protection goes down first.
