Avery Hill kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.
Interwar semis around the park with standard rear kitchens, plus a stock of low-rise flats and former college accommodation where kitchens are compact single runs under 3m.
Wide residential roads with verges and drives, plenty of turning room, and quiet park roads outside school run times. Extension work is less common than in Eltham; most jobs replace tired units and worktops within the original footprint. A lot of like-for-like replacements over existing carcasses, check the old units are still level and sound before promising a flat finish.
There is nearly always a boxed service duct or a stopcock cupboard in one corner, and it eats into the usable depth of the run. That suits a full-height piece, because a large flat panel bonded across its back is more stable on concrete than a run of small tiles ever was. Decided before fabrication starts.
What we are usually templating in is 1930s semi, postwar municipal housing, 1960s low-rise flats and campus conversion housing. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.
1930s and inter-war semis
The building, and what it does to the job
Chased-in conduit and surface-mounted trunking running across the wall at worktop height, which sets an immovable minimum for where the upstand can sit flat.
1930s and inter-war semis
The shape of the run
Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Corners get their own pieces.
1930s and inter-war semis
True everywhere, stated once
What decides between a slim upstand and a full-height splashback is nearly always the wall: what it is made of, how flat it is, and where the sockets ended up.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Avery Hill
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Avery Hill?
Yes. Avery Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE9. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Greenwich. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Avery Hill change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
Low-rise blocks are three or four storeys with a single stair and no lift, so pieces go up on edge and the half-landing sets the maximum length. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. A lot of like-for-like replacements over existing carcasses, check the old units are still level and sound before promising a flat finish.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Avery Hill?
Wide residential roads with verges and drives, plenty of turning room, and quiet park roads outside school run times. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Joint positions follow from that.
Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in Avery Hill?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Sockets final before template.
Why do two Avery Hill kitchens the same size price differently?
Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. Any surface trunking or conduit has to be rerouted or accepted and boxed before templating, because the stone cannot be scribed around a live conduit on site. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. Splashbacks are cut from the same slab run as the tops, so they have to be decided before fabrication, not after. Same slab run as the tops.
