Yes. Brimsdown is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EN3. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Enfield. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. The scullery floor was quarry tile bedded on concrete and it is often still under a laminate, sitting lower than the boards in the room it now joins. Most of these have a side passage and a back door, so a full-length piece can usually reach the kitchen without being cut down, and the piece sizing is driven by the slab rather than the route. A century of movement is taken out at the bench. A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Oversize on the scribe edge, always.

A loading bay or a red route puts a clock on the unload, so the pieces come off in the order they will be fitted rather than the order they were loaded. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The crate is built to the same measurement. A shared drive is only useful if the neighbour is not the one parked behind the van, so we ask which side the standing belongs to before the date is set. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch.

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Quartz reorders in five years, a granite block does not. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Every flat cut off one drawing, errors included.

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Cut-outs are machined with the piece bedded down. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.

A downstand over a run caps wall unit height before it caps anything else, and the splashback then takes its height from the steel rather than from the units. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The radius goes in at the bench, not on site. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Because the money comes out of a household rather than a maintenance budget, phasing is common: tops now, island or splashbacks later, quoted so the second visit still matches the first. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A provider specification is cut exactly as written.

The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. The kitchen door opens inwards into the middle of a run, so the usable length of that wall stops well short of the corner. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The offcut is planned before the main piece is cut.

The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Two slabs get sequenced when one will not cover the run.

Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Apron mitres are bonded and polished before dispatch.

The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. An external stair, a side return or a rear garden counts as carry and is measured the same way. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. A piece is cut to the turn it has to clear.
