Worktop replacement in Canons Park

Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.

Canons Park kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semi and detached1930s purpose-built flat blockpost-war infill

Permitted working hours, a porter and a booked lift set a hard finish time on the day whatever stage the fit has reached. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.

Well-proportioned interwar houses laid out around the park with kitchens usually extended once, giving a 3.6m run plus a modest island, alongside 1930s low-rise flat blocks with original small kitchens that are being modernised without moving the plumbing. Utility rooms appear in the houses, never in the flats.

These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. The lift car is usually too short and too low to take a full-length piece flat or on edge, so stone either goes up the communal stairs with their half-landings and winders, or the run is designed with joins that suit the staircase rather than the kitchen. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s semi and detached, 1930s purpose-built flat block and post-war infill. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Height change is checked before we cut.

Getting stone into the room

Wide roads with verges and drives on the houses, and the flat blocks have generous communal entrances but low-headroom stairwells that decide how a slab is turned.

The building, and what it does to the job

In the 1930s blocks the kitchen window sits low and the original tiled splashback is bedded thick, so allow for hacking off before the upstand can sit flush.

This is the job the local stock asks for first, ahead of worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Canons Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Canons Park?

Yes. Canons Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA8, HA7. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Canons Park change how worktop replacement works?

The original kitchen was a small service room, so what is there now is a knock-through and the junction between the two floors is rarely level. A mansion block is a logistics job before it is a stone job. Sound carcasses are the one condition. In the 1930s blocks the kitchen window sits low and the original tiled splashback is bedded thick, so allow for hacking off before the upstand can sit flush.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Canons Park?

Wide roads with verges and drives on the houses, and the flat blocks have generous communal entrances but low-headroom stairwells that decide how a slab is turned. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. That is agreed before a plumber is booked. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is Canons Park mostly worktop replacement work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.

Why do two Canons Park kitchens the same size price differently?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Get the managing agent's or freeholder's approval and the permitted hours confirmed beforehand, and agree with the porter who protects the communal carpet, stonework and lift. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Units kept, surface changed.
