Yes. Childs Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW2, NW11. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. Estate roads inside a controlled zone are sometimes managed privately rather than by the council, which changes who has to be asked. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. Kerbside unloading is planned in the racking, not improvised at the door. Cornice runs round the head of the wall, so the wall units stop under it and the splashback band is trapped between two things that are not going to move. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. Cut-outs are placed where the fabric will take them. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. The measured wall angle travels to the saw.

Where the stairwell is narrow enough that the stone travels on edge the polished face runs within an inch of the plaster, so the walls get boarded as well as the steps. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The crate is built to the same measurement. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it.

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Cut for the slot, because the slot will not move. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. The batch is checked against itself before it leaves.

A doorway partway along one wall breaks that side into two separate pieces, and two short pieces cost more between them than the single long one they replace. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Apron mitres are bonded and polished before dispatch. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Yield drops the moment the back edge stops being straight. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. The approved drawing is the instruction.

A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. Handles on opposing runs meet in the middle of the aisle, so a deep edge profile specified on both sides takes width out of the standing space twice over. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Seams land over gables, never over a void.

How much slab you hold matters: upstands and any remake have to come out of the same batch. Thickness has to be known before quoting, since it decides the edge, the cut-outs and what the units carry. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Repeat pieces are cut from one drawing set, so what arrives on the bench is the same every time. Ten metres of upstand out of what the tops left.

The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. A window sill or a radiator on the half-landing takes the corner out of the turn at precisely the point the piece needs that corner. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. A piece is cut to the turn it has to clear.

The joint between splashback and worktop is siliconed, never grouted, so it can move a little without cracking. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. The chimney breast is usually still standing with the opening blocked up, and the alcoves either side of it are rarely the same width as each other. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. Where the floor drops away the front edge is cut to suit.
