Worktop installation in Fortune Green
Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.
Fortune Green kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. The route is walked before the first lift.
More whole houses than the streets nearer the station, so kitchens sit at the rear of the ground floor and are often already extended into a small rear infill giving an L of about 3.5m plus a return.
Islands only appear where two rooms have been knocked together, otherwise a peninsula against the old chimney breast. Quiet residential streets with permit parking and better van access than most of NW6, though the climb up from Fortune Green Road is a real factor on the carry.
Access is a question about the plot rather than the house: a narrow frontage between older buildings with nowhere obvious to stand a van. Everything comes up in the lift, so we measure the lift car's internal diagonal before the piece is loaded, because a car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a 3m worktop no matter how you stand it. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
On these streets the housing is Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi, purpose-built block and post-war infill. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop templating. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

Getting stone into the room
Front doors open into a porch and then a hall with a right turn at the stairs, which is the pinch point on almost every house.
Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is.

The building, and what it does to the job
Edwardian rear walls here are usually rendered and bowed, so expect to scribe the back edge and pack the units before setting anything down.

Questions
Worktop installation in Fortune Green
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Fortune Green on your patch?
Yes. Fortune Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW6, NW2. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Enforcement zones rarely accept a trade van unloading stone as an exemption, so this gets sorted before the date is confirmed rather than argued about afterwards. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Fortune Green be any different from anywhere else?
An infill house is built to modern standards on an old plot, so the room is square even though the site around it is not. If the diagonal is short we either split the run with a planned join or, on lower floors, carry up the stairwell, which needs the half-landing turn checking as well. That is the shape of the day. Edwardian rear walls here are usually rendered and bowed, so expect to scribe the back edge and pack the units before setting anything down.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Fortune Green?
Quiet residential streets with permit parking and better van access than most of NW6, though the climb up from Fortune Green Road is a real factor on the carry. Front doors open into a porch and then a hall with a right turn at the stairs, which is the pinch point on almost every house. Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. That is what the morning is planned around. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is worktop installation common in Fortune Green?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Fortune Green?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Book the service lift and loading bay with the building manager for the whole fitting window, and have the fob or key for lift override ready. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
