Rotherhithe kitchens
The buildings and streets around Rotherhithe
Whatever you have read about bathroom worktop fitting in Rotherhithe, the only version that matters is the one measured against the kitchen you are standing in. The old village cottages near St Mary's have small closed kitchens with 2m to 2.5m runs and a return under the window, while the 1980s dock housing and later riverside blocks give a squarer room with a peninsula dividing kitchen from living space. Bring us the problem rather than the diagnosis. Working out what you have got is the first thing we do.
A picture rail, a deep skirting and a moulded architrave all sit in the way of anything that assumes flat wall from floor to ceiling. Nobody looks at a bathroom surface until the sealant discolours, at which point nobody looks at anything else in the room. A vanity is where an expensive slab stops being expensive.
Many have had the ground floor chimney breast removed to gain three hundred millimetres, and the gained strip is newer blockwork standing proud of the old plaster. The bathroom in one of these is almost never original: it is a later room over the back addition, or a bedroom divided in two. An original bathroom is usually the smallest room upstairs.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to Georgian dock cottage, Victorian terrace, 1980s docklands housing and 2000s riverside apartment. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.
