Worktop templating in St Quintin Park

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

St Quintin Park kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian estate terraceArts and Crafts influenced semiinterwar cottage housingsmall modern infill

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

The St Quintin streets are later and lower density than the stucco to the south, so kitchens are ground floor at the rear with a side return that has usually been infilled to give an L of about 3.4m plus 2.2m, and bifolds onto a proper garden.

Because the ground floor is level with the garden rather than sunk, appliances and worktops go straight in through the back rather than round the front.

The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. The laser plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to Edwardian estate terrace, Arts and Crafts influenced semi, interwar cottage housing and small modern infill. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Low-rise blocks are three or four storeys with a single stair and no lift, so pieces go up on edge and the half-landing sets the maximum length. Carcass heights are read individually, since legs bottoming out on concrete mean the units do not share one plane. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn.

Check the side alley clear width at template - an 800mm gap will not pass a 900mm deep island top no matter how it is angled.

Getting stone into the room

Wider streets and front gardens mean you can generally get a van reasonably close, but the front paths have steps and low gate posts and the side alleys between houses are frequently under 800mm clear. If the rear route is on, use it; if not, everything goes down a hallway with a stair spindle at the far end.

Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for.

What gets asked for here

Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop fabrication and worktop installation behind it.

Getting stone into a St Quintin Park kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in St Quintin Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover St Quintin Park?

Yes. St Quintin Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W10. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in St Quintin Park change how worktop templating works?

Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Check the side alley clear width at template - an 800mm gap will not pass a 900mm deep island top no matter how it is angled.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in St Quintin Park?

Wider streets and front gardens mean you can generally get a van reasonably close, but the front paths have steps and low gate posts and the side alleys between houses are frequently under 800mm clear. If the rear route is on, use it; if not, everything goes down a hallway with a stair spindle at the far end. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is St Quintin Park mostly worktop templating work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop fabrication and worktop installation. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

Why do two St Quintin Park kitchens the same size price differently?

An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Plotted, not estimated. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Appliances on site, not on order.
