The chimney breast in the kitchen served a back boiler behind the living room fire, so the flue is a shared one and the breast is deeper than a fireplace would need. Deck access or a single narrow staircase with tight half-landings means long pieces get walked up on edge, and the landing turn is checked before we commit. The building moved decades ago and the fit allows for it.

A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop.
