Windows are large industrial openings with deep sills, and a run finishing at one meets a reveal a full brick deep. These read as easy from the outside and rarely are. Soft brick takes a different plug to blockwork. An intruding steel column, a brick pier or a downstand breaks a run that would otherwise have been one clean piece. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Carcasses get packed level before anything is offered up.

A window lift means the glass unit and often the frame come out first, and putting it back weathertight is part of the same day. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. Nothing is carried past an obstruction that could have been moved. Estate roads inside a controlled zone are sometimes managed privately rather than by the council, which changes who has to be asked. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. We would rather ask than guess.

One of the three we are asked for most, although worktop fabrication is asked for more. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One kitchen out of use, never the whole house. Kitchens go in near the end of a conversion, behind the plastering and the flooring, by which point the programme has already absorbed whatever slipped earlier. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. Plot after plot, the same fitting sequence.

Where an overhang is too deep for steel on its own the choice is a leg at the end or a bracket underneath, and a bracket that lands where a knee goes is worse than no bracket at all. Where a column lands in the run the template plots its actual outline so the stone is cut to fit around it rather than stopped short and filled. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. A forced back edge cracks weeks later. Confirm loading bay access and lift booking with the building's management, and clear any furniture from the mezzanine stairs or split-level approach. Where the owner is not local, the decisions happen remotely, so photographs and a clear itemised drawing carry more weight than a showroom visit ever would. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. The managing agent books the lift, not the household.

If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. A corbel on show under an overhang is a decision about how the piece looks from a stool, so it gets settled alongside the edge profile rather than left to whoever fits it. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The return is offered up last.

The fit follows 5 to 10 working days after the template, and nothing is cut before that visit because nothing is cut from a plan. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. Open plan means long uninterrupted runs and an island in the middle of the room with every edge on show. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. The route is walked before the first lift.

A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Packing takes up small variation. It is not there to hide something that belongs in the units. Exposed structure means the back edge is not a straight line at all, and a scribe of fifteen or twenty millimetres across a run is normal. It adds an hour or two to the day, and that time sits in the schedule rather than being taken out of the finishing. Mark it, lift it, cut it, offer it up again.

Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. The piece is offered up, marked, taken back out and cut, and that cycle can run twice before anything is bonded down. The gap closes on the grinder, not in the sealant gun.
