Yes. Wapping is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1W. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. What comes off first is settled before the doors shut. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

Steel columns and downstands land where the frame put them, which is frequently in the middle of what would otherwise be a clean run. The kitchen is open plan and the island is often long enough to need a join, and it sits in the middle of the room where every edge is visible, so the join goes over a gable and usually under the hob line where the eye does not follow it. The bow in an old wall is cut for, not sanded out. A brick pier standing into the run divides it in two, and the join goes against the pier where a clear wall would have needed no join at all. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Cut oversize on purpose, every time.

Hoisting is planned at quote stage or not at all, because the crew, the equipment and the permissions are three separate bookings. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Load order is set by the order the pieces will be carried. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load sheet carries the parking note with it.

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Small kitchens are more bench work per square metre. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Cut for the slot, because the slot will not move.

It is the heaviest single piece in the kitchen, so the number of hands needed on the day and the route in are worked out from that piece rather than from the runs. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Join count follows the shape, not the metreage. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

Where the structure cannot be cut into, the stone is relieved instead, and a relief that deep changes both the yield off the slab and how the piece is handled. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The relief comes out of the slab, not the fitter. The island layout, including whether the ends are mitred down to the floor, needs settling before cutting, since mitred ends are cut in sequence with the top and dry-assembled as one unit. Quartz is the sensible default in a rental: nothing to seal, nothing to maintain, and nothing an incoming tenant needs briefing on. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A provider specification is cut exactly as written.

Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. An intruding steel column, a brick pier or a downstand breaks a run that would otherwise have been one clean piece. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Geometry first, then the saw.

Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. The goods lift is generous and the flat entrance often is not, so the tightest point on the route is inside the flat rather than in the building. Access is by goods lift or a shared stair with a hard turn onto the landing, and both cap the piece length, so the nesting is done to the measured car or turn rather than to the slab. A scribe of twenty millimetres is machined, not fettled on site.

The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Where a column lands in the run the template plots its actual outline so the stone is cut to fit around it rather than stopped short and filled. It also decides where in the slab the piece is taken from, because a deep relief needs material behind it that a straight edge never asks for. A square internal corner is a crack waiting.

If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Whether it comes off the same slab as the run behind it or needs one of its own is settled by laying both against the usable area of the slab, not by adding the metres up. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Drawn onto the slab before it is cut.
