The van is not staying on a main road for the day, so once the stone is off it goes and parks properly somewhere else. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. The load plan follows from it.

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. Every flat on the floor is the same plan handed left and right, so the room is predictable even where the building is not. We work to the internal depth of the car and the diagonal you can actually stand a piece up on with the doors closed, then nest to that, which routinely turns a two-piece kitchen into a three-piece one with an extra join over a gable. Older houses come off the bench with longer scribes.

Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. The room is genuinely square and the units are plumb, so the visit is more about the building than about the kitchen. The lift diagonal governs the longest piece, so the join count is fixed at nesting and cannot be revisited on the day. The fall across the floor is in the cut list.

If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. A hob cut-out and the floor penetration feeding it have to land over the same cabinet, and where they do not it is the stone that gets redrawn rather than the pipework. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Undersides are polished where the piece is seen from below.

Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. What changes is the surface. The carcasses underneath stay where they are. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. Where the carry is long the pieces are strapped for handling rather than for the shortest route off the tail lift. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb.
