A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. A short upstand shows a fragment of pattern, never a run of it. Send the island size and the perimeter lengths, tell us the ceiling and window arrangement, and say whether the pod services come up through the floor. Nobody reseals a worktop annually in a let property, so a material that depends on being resealed is the wrong specification however well it photographs. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. A week under your own lights is how a colour declares itself.

The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. What decides it is not the width of the stairwell but the length of piece that can be turned in it. Where nothing will go up the stairs or into the lift, the only route left is through an opening, and that is a lifting operation rather than a carry. Where a seam becomes unavoidable the choice of stone starts to matter, because a fine even speckle closes a joint almost invisibly and a broad vein simply will not. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. Open volume and hard surfaces mean the worktop is read from a distance, and stone looks quite different at four metres from how it looks at arm length. A galley nests efficiently and frees money for better stone.

Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. The units are untouched. Only the top of them changes. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. Some zones are controlled for a short window in the middle of the day and open either side of it, which makes the timing of the visit the whole question. Sintered surfaces are the hardest of the three to machine and the messiest to cut wet, which is precisely why none of that happens on a public pavement. Cutting is done wet and extracted, never dry on a pavement.

Units have to be fixed down as well as levelled. A loose carcass moves under stone. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. A downstand over a run caps wall unit height before it caps anything else, and the splashback then takes its height from the steel rather than from the units. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. Reach across an unsupported span is a thickness question.
