That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Where a break is unavoidable it goes into the quietest part of the pattern. The goods lift has its own booking sheet, and a bay slot without a lift slot only gets the stone as far as the lobby. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Cut-outs take material out of the piece that carries the sink. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. Strong daylight is an argument for a surface built to take it. Send the kitchen layout with run lengths and the peninsula projection if there is one, and tell us what the lift will take as a single piece. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. Matching anything later means writing down the batch reference now.

The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. If a piece cannot be got in at all, we say so at the template rather than on the day. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. A car will often hold more than its doors will admit, and it is the clear width between the door edges that a piece actually has to pass through. Where a seam becomes unavoidable the choice of stone starts to matter, because a fine even speckle closes a joint almost invisibly and a broad vein simply will not. Pattern is carried across a seam on the bench, never by eye on site.

A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. Two kitchens of one size can differ by double on the stone alone.

An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. A bay shared across a parade of shops turns over all day, so the arrival time matters more than the length of the booking does. Sintered surfaces are the hardest of the three to machine and the messiest to cut wet, which is precisely why none of that happens on a public pavement. Remnants become chopping boards, hearths and window boards.

What decides between them is usually the wall: what it is built of, how flat it is, and where the sockets ended up. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Boxed soil stacks and ventilation ducts run behind the units, and the boxing depth changes between floor level and worktop height. Light is almost entirely artificial and frequently cool, which pushes warm creams towards grey and makes a genuinely neutral colour the safer choice under bulbs that are already in the ceiling. A low seam count is what makes a small kitchen good value.
