Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. One movement off the van starts with how it went on. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Boxed sash frames swallow a hundred millimetres of wall on each side of the opening, so the wall between a window and a corner is shorter than a plan makes it look. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Nothing leaves the bench longer than the way in allows. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. Kerbside unloading is planned in the racking, not improvised at the door.

Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. The notch is machined, never ground in later.

Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Original shutter boxes survive in the reveals of the front rooms and stand proud of the plaster, and that is the line a run under the window has to be scribed to. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. The template carries the building into the workshop.

Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Where the hall runs straight through to the back the piece can be walked in flat, and it is only the two door frames that have to be cleared. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. A remake is the price of guessing that measurement.

Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Say what you have and where it came from before anything is booked, because thickness and batch decide what can be done with it. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Short runs waste more slab than long ones do.
