Askew Road kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. A single day, planned properly.
Smaller cottage-scale terraces where the whole ground floor is only about 4.5m wide, so a side return infill only buys another metre and the kitchen ends up as a 3.2m run with a 1.2-1.6m peninsula rather than a full island.
Ceiling heights in the rear addition are low, which pushes people toward slim 20mm tops and upstands instead of full-height stone. Narrow streets with parking both sides mean a Luton effectively blocks the road, so a short controlled unload with a spotter is the way to do it.
Cottage terraces have no hall to speak of and the front door opens almost straight into the room, which makes the carry easier and the protection harder. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day.
What we are usually templating in is small two-up two-down terrace, late Victorian bay-fronted terrace, flat over shop and modern rear extension. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Getting stone into the room
Front doors open straight into a small hall with the stairs immediately in front, so the turn from front door to kitchen is often less than 2m of clear travel.

What gets asked for here
Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop templating comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

The building, and what it does to the job
The front-door-to-stair distance is the number that matters on these cottages - if you cannot swing it in the hall, it goes over the back fence.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Askew Road
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Askew Road, or just list it?
Yes. Askew Road is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W12. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Askew Road?
Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Units kept, surface changed, one day. The front-door-to-stair distance is the number that matters on these cottages - if you cannot swing it in the hall, it goes over the back fence.
Is access a problem in Askew Road?
Narrow streets with parking both sides mean a Luton effectively blocks the road, so a short controlled unload with a spotter is the way to do it. Front doors open straight into a small hall with the stairs immediately in front, so the turn from front door to kitchen is often less than 2m of clear travel. A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.
Is worktop replacement common in Askew Road?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Askew Road?
Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. The laminate has been covering it up. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
