Askew Road kitchens
The kitchens we meet in Askew Road
Nothing about splashback and upstand work in Askew Road is decided by us alone, since the units, the walls and the way you get through the door all get a say. Smaller cottage-scale terraces where the whole ground floor is only about 4.5m wide, so a side return infill only buys another metre and the kitchen ends up as a 3.2m run with a 1.2-1.6m peninsula rather than a full island. Ceiling heights in the rear addition are low, which pushes people toward slim 20mm tops and upstands instead of full-height stone. If you are not sure, say so when you get in touch. It is a normal answer and we work with it.
Chimney breasts are often taken out at ground level and left standing above, so the middle of the run is newer wall than the two ends of it. Height is set off the units and the hob, not off the tile line that was there before. Panel joints land over a unit line, never mid-span.
Many have had the ground floor chimney breast removed to gain three hundred millimetres, and the gained strip is newer blockwork standing proud of the old plaster. Sockets and switches are cut to measured positions with the faceplates off, not to the positions shown on a drawing. Sockets in a stud wall move more easily than sockets in brick.
The houses and blocks behind these jobs are small two-up two-down terrace, late Victorian bay-fronted terrace, flat over shop and modern rear extension. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.
