The island layout, including whether the ends are mitred down to the floor, needs settling before cutting, since mitred ends are cut in sequence with the top and dry-assembled as one unit. Inventories record the condition of a kitchen at both ends of a tenancy, which is a practical argument for a surface that looks the same in its fifth year as its first. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A landlord repeating a kitchen gets the same detail cut.

The template can be taken with the old top still down, which is why one visit covers both. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. Carcasses stay. Surface changes. That is the whole of it. The van is not staying on a main road for the day, so once the stone is off it goes and parks properly somewhere else. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. A long walk from the van earns heavier corner protection.

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. Windows are large industrial openings with deep sills, and a run finishing at one meets a reveal a full brick deep. A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how uneven the wall is changes which part of the slab a piece is cut from. Lath and plaster is cut for, never cut into.
