Canning Town kitchens
The buildings and streets around Canning Town
Getting reception counter work in Canning Town right is mostly a matter of knowing what you are dealing with before the order goes in, and that means looking properly. New regeneration blocks have compact open-plan kitchens with a 2.4m to 3m run and a tall appliance stack, no island, and a balcony door at one end. Older estate flats keep a separate kitchen of around 2.2m with a boiler cupboard eating the corner. None of it needs deciding today. The survey is where the guessing ends and the numbers start.
The ceiling is a concrete soffit with a skim on it, so there is nothing to fix into overhead and no void to hide anything in. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. A reception is in use the morning after, and that sets the sequence.
The kitchen is a small square room off a narrow entrance lobby, and the turn out of that lobby is the real limit on piece length. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, and every one has a counter the public queues at. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anybody draws it.
The housing behind these kitchens is post-war council estate, 1980s low-rise and 2010s onwards regeneration apartment block. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Canning Town is its own job
A firm that has not worked in Canning Town tends to find out about the access on the morning of the fit, which is too late to change anything. The area is carved up by flyovers, the tunnel approach and red routes, so the practical unloading point is often inside an estate or a development service yard rather than the nearest road. New blocks require the managing agent to sign off a delivery slot, and lift dimensions vary a lot between phases of the same development. Different phases of the same regeneration scheme have different lift sizes, so confirm the block, not just the postcode, before promising a single-piece top. Far better to find it in Canning Town with a tape measure in our hands than on the day the slab arrives.
The work
What reception counters involves
Support for any overhang at the public face belongs to the drawing, whether that turns out to be a steel flat, a plywood deck or a gable the joiner adds for us. Aperture positions are confirmed on site with whoever will work at the counter, since a card reader and a cable grommet both move after an architect has placed them. You end up with every visible edge finished alike, front, back and both returns, because a counter is seen from all sides in a way a worktop never is.
Counter work starts where the joinery finishes: a carcass built by another trade, and a stone top made to what that carcass actually turned out to be. A curved front is cut on a waterjet from the same drawing the joiner built the carcass to, so the two radii agree. The building rarely closes, so the counter goes in outside opening hours with the route boarded from the entrance door. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money
What it costs in Canning Town
Machining is where the money sits: apertures for cable and card readers, a radiused internal corner at every opening, and a mitred return between the two levels. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Material is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, with the batch and the slab size sitting behind that variation, and the workshop time quoted apart from it. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

Canning Town in the housing figures
Taken across Canning Town and the roads either side of it, this is overwhelmingly let and managed property. On a room that size the cut-outs cost more than the area. Permission to work late and a booked goods lift sit with the building rather than with the person behind the desk. The carcass as built is the only dimension that counts.

What Canning Town asks for
This one sits outside the domestic mix entirely. That mix, locally, is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Commercial pieces are drawn, cut and fitted exactly as a kitchen would be.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
The carry, and what it rules out
A car ceiling at 2.2m sets the tallest thing that will stand in it, and the trap panel and light fitting take a slice off even that. A finished lobby is almost always still in use, so the floor is covered and the route boarded before a single piece leaves the van. A knee recess is an opening, and an opening weakens a piece in transit.
Access
Getting stone into a Canning Town kitchen
The area is carved up by flyovers, the tunnel approach and red routes, so the practical unloading point is often inside an estate or a development service yard rather than the nearest road. New blocks require the managing agent to sign off a delivery slot, and lift dimensions vary a lot between phases of the same development.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Canning Town
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do your own fitters come out to Canning Town?
Yes. Canning Town is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E16. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Newham. A single red line has hours and a double red line does not, and the difference decides whether an early start is a plan or a penalty. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Trolleys cross block paving badly, so boards go down first. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What should I expect from reception counters in a Canning Town kitchen?
There is nearly always a boxed service duct or a stopcock cupboard in one corner, and it eats into the usable depth of the run. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them, and every one has a counter the public queues at: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, a library. Marketing suites get a permanent counter for a temporary lobby. A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. The back return follows the wall as the wall leans.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Canning Town?
A goods lift booked by the hour puts a clock on the whole delivery, so pieces go up in a planned order and nothing is handled twice. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Every re-grip near a finished front edge is planned out beforehand. Where a marked loading box sits on the red route the stop is legal but timed, so the unload runs as one movement with every hand on it. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. One space, one visit, and the counter goes in whole.
Is Canning Town really a reception counters area?
Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. A spare offcut kept back can save a whole counter later. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Repeat receptions are worth settling once and then leaving alone.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
A full-depth tall unit projects past the worktop line, and the run has to be scribed against its side panel instead of carrying on past it. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Where the front curves, the shelf below it curves with it. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.
What state does a Canning Town kitchen have to be in before you template?
A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. Column casings take machined returns, not filler. Tell us the hours the building can be worked in and whether the lobby stays open, and send photographs of every corner so we can find the ducts before we draw. A leaseholder paying for their own kitchen inside managed stock still needs the freeholder to consent, and that consent is about the building and the common parts rather than about the worktop. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Somebody has to book the lift, and it is rarely the receptionist.
Do you quote Canning Town jobs by the square metre?
The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. What is out of true gets measured, not talked around.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. Each cut-out is priced on its own line, so a range, a bowl and a half, a boiling tap and a drainer are four items rather than one. Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. Where the sink and the hob face each other across the aisle, everything carried between them crosses the walkway, and that is the one movement the shape cannot design out. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. The return between the two levels is drawn first and cut first.
Who decides where a join falls?
A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. What you get is a line rather than a step, because the pieces are levelled to each other first. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. A run that stops in mid-air at the open end needs a finished end rather than a cut one, and that end takes the same edge work as the whole front. Where the front is curved the top is cut on a waterjet, and the carcass has to be built to the same radius rather than close to it. A counter join lines up with the plane above it or it gets moved.
Do most Canning Town kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?
Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. The joint between splashback and worktop is siliconed, never grouted, so it can move a little without cracking. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. The kitchen has one external wall carrying a window and a door to a balcony or a drying area, which uses up most of that wall. These are the counters where the lower transaction shelf earns its keep, because the people served at it are the people the standard was written for, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than taken off a drawing. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.
