What the kitchens here are actually like

large Victorian villavilla converted to flatsVictorian terrace1930s mansion block

Walls that are old, thick and rarely straight make dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the day. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

Big subdivided villas mean unusual kitchen shapes: high ceilings, tall sash windows down to worktop height and runs that stop short because of a chimney breast or a boxed-in riser. Whole-house owners on the terraces mostly go for a side-return kitchen with a long island.

Sash windows sitting almost on the worktop line mean the upstand has to stop and return at the reveal, which needs proper detailing rather than a cut-off at the sill.

These kitchens are big rooms with long perimeter runs and an island, so level has to hold across the whole floor rather than along one wall. The old island top is frequently sitting on units that were never fixed down, which is fine for laminate and not for stone. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to large Victorian villa, villa converted to flats, Victorian terrace and 1930s mansion block. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Very steep hills, red routes and bus lanes on the main roads, and permit parking on the side streets. Upper-floor flats in converted villas often have three flights and a narrow original stair.

Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.

The building, and what it does to the job

An island that is not fixed to the floor, is not level along its length, or has a breakfast-bar overhang with nothing supporting it.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop templating. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Crystal Palace

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Crystal Palace?

Yes. Crystal Palace is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE19, SE20. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Crystal Palace change how worktop replacement works?

A range sitting in a chimney recess is common, and the flanking pieces are cut with the manufacturer clearance built into the template. Any island overhang past about 300mm will not carry weight on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or brackets have to be let into the units first, and that is agreed at template stage, not on fit day. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Sash windows sitting almost on the worktop line mean the upstand has to stop and return at the reveal, which needs proper detailing rather than a cut-off at the sill.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Crystal Palace?

Very steep hills, red routes and bus lanes on the main roads, and permit parking on the side streets. Upper-floor flats in converted villas often have three flights and a narrow original stair. Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you do much worktop replacement around Crystal Palace?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A plumber either side of us. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.

Why do two Crystal Palace kitchens the same size price differently?

An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a fitter or joiner fix and level the island units beforehand, and get the sink, taps, hob and any range on site before templating so we cut to the actual appliances. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Plumber either side of us.
