On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. The house is designed to the width it was allowed, so the kitchen is long and narrow and the run has no real choice about where it goes. Piece size is set by the lift car, not by the slab. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. The van is packed to suit the walk at the other end.

Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Short runs waste more slab than long ones do. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. The annexe top comes off the main kitchen slab.

A doorway partway along one wall breaks that side into two separate pieces, and two short pieces cost more between them than the single long one they replace. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. One setting serves both halves of a mitre. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.

A lightweight stud partition will not carry a breakfast bar or a peninsula end, and stone finds that out faster than laminate ever did. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. A deep relief needs material left behind it. Sink, tap and hob need to be with us before machining, along with confirmation of whether the island is getting a breakfast overhang, since anything past roughly 300mm unsupported needs steel let into the carcasses and that has to be built in, not added later. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Cut once, to the sheet that came back signed.

Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds solid and is hollow behind, so anything fixed through it has to hit a dab or a batten rather than a void. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. The notch is machined, never ground in later.

A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. Handles on opposing runs meet in the middle of the aisle, so a deep edge profile specified on both sides takes width out of the standing space twice over. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. The saw follows the nest, not the floor plan.

An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop. Every piece is drawn onto the slab before anything is cut, so the veining and the join positions are decided together rather than one after the other. Book-matched pieces are cut adjacent or not at all.

Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. An old house eats more slab than a new one.
