Fitzrovia kitchens
The kitchens we meet in Fitzrovia
Half of what we get asked about splashback and upstand work in Fitzrovia could be answered by a tape measure and ten minutes in the room in question. Mostly apartments, many carved out of former commercial floors, which gives an open-plan kitchen along one wall of a large room at 3-4m and sometimes a genuine island where the floorplate allows. The older above-shop flats are the opposite, tiny and tucked behind a hall with services in the worst possible corner. Work out none of it yourself. Tell us the address in Fitzrovia and roughly what you are replacing, and we will take it from there.
A boiler hangs on the wall above the run in most of these, and its pipework drops exactly where a splashback wants to go. Socket positions, sill heights and wall flatness are the three things that settle this, and all three are properties of the building. Height off the units, not off the old tiles.
The front rooms sit over the shop window with a structural beam beneath them, and the floor either side of that beam is not at one level. Patched plaster next to original render sits at different depths, and that step is exactly what an upstand covers. What the plaster is stuck to matters more than its colour.
The building stock is Georgian terrace above retail, warehouse and office conversion, 1930s block and modern apartment. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
