Greenhill kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Greenhill

The reason splashback and upstand work in Greenhill is quoted per kitchen rather than per metre comes down to the range of rooms these worktops end up in. Town centre living: compact apartment kitchens, many in converted offices where the kitchen is a single wall of 2.4m to 3m against a service core with no window. Upgrades are cosmetic by necessity because the layout is locked, so tops, upstands and a new sink are the whole job. None of that changes what you pay in Greenhill. The figure is set at template and it holds from there.

The lift car, the loading bay and the building manager decide the piece sizes here, not the slab. Cutting sockets and switch plates into stone is a workshop operation, so the electrics have to be final before the template. Behind the hob is where full height earns its cost.

A raised access floor may still be in place under the finish, and it is hollow, so an island is fixed to what is below rather than to the deck. A full-height panel is bonded across its back and carried on the upstand line rather than left hanging on adhesive alone. Nothing goes on a wall that will not hold it.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1930s flat above shops, 1960s office-to-residential conversion and 2010s-2020s town centre tower. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Upstands are small pieces, so they usually come out of the offcut the worktop leaves.
  • Dekton and sintered stone are stable in heat and daylight, which is why they suit a wall behind a hob.
  • A wide wall takes more than one piece, because slab width is finite.

The place

Why Greenhill is its own job

Before we quote a length in Greenhill we want to know how the stone gets in and what it will be sitting against. Multi-storey and podium parking with height barriers, controlled loading bays with strict time limits, and goods lifts that need booking through building management. Station Road and College Road restrictions rule out casual kerbside unloading. Office conversions have shallow floor-to-ceiling zones and boxed services above the units, so measure the clearance for tilting a slab upright inside the room. The itemised quote is deliberately boring reading, because a boring quote is one with no surprises left in it.

The work

What worktop splashbacks & upstands involves

The pieces are made to the wall they will stand against, so they are not stock items and cannot be ordered from a size. Each one is drawn for its own stretch of wall. The wall is read for how flat and how plumb it is before anything is drawn, because a panel that stands off a bowed wall at one end shows it along its whole length. You end up with a run of stone that reads as one decision rather than two, because the wall and the surface were drawn, machined and fitted as parts of the same job.

Splashbacks and upstands are the part of the job that takes the grout line out of the kitchen, which is what most people are really asking for when they ask about stone behind the hob. Where a run is longer than one sheet will give, the split is put on a vertical that lines up with a cabinet gable or the end of the hob. The hob is usually a small induction unit on a stud partition, which makes a tall sheet a question of wiping down rather than of heat. One sheet, two seams, nothing to reseal.

The money

What it costs in Greenhill

A full-height splashback costs more than an upstand for the obvious reason and one less obvious one: there is more to scribe and more to machine around. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. A per square metre figure of £110 to £550 describes stone, not a worktop. What turns one into the other is machining and a fitting day, and both are listed as themselves. Quoted as its own item, so the grout line has a price.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. The break goes where a joint reads as deliberate.

What Greenhill asks for

Asked for often here, just not as often as worktop replacement. Same day, same team, same standard.

Greenhill in the housing figures

Across this patch a large share of the housing has gone up in the last fifteen years. Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet. The joint line is planned, not discovered.

Getting stone into a Greenhill kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Greenhill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Are you set up to work in Greenhill, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Greenhill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA1. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. The crate exists for the walk from the van. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.

02

What do the kitchens in Greenhill do to worktop splashbacks & upstands?

The window line is a continuous ribbon with structural mullions, so a run under it stops at a mullion rather than at a wall. The plasterboard is genuinely flat here, so a full-height splashback sits well and a slim upstand looks almost redundant, but the sockets are the problem, because they are set out to the developer's original kitchen and often land at odd heights or right on a joint line. The age of the plaster decides the fixing, not the finish. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Each obstruction is another joint, and it is priced as one.

03

Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Greenhill kitchens?

Booked delivery windows on a managed estate run to an hour, and a worktop install does not happen inside an hour. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. A panel that would need turning indoors is turned outside instead. Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. A tall panel and a timed bay is the worst combination here.

04

Do Greenhill kitchens ask for worktop splashbacks & upstands much?

Often enough. It is one of the three, behind worktop replacement. The template, the workshop and the installers are the same either way. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Wipe-down beats sealed grout on a turnaround. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Plot spec panels are ordered by the plot, not the room.

05

What decides the price of a worktop in Greenhill?

Where the aisle is too tight the usual answer is a reduced-depth top on one side, and a 500mm run is a different cut, a different sink and a different drainer to a 600mm one. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. A joint behind a tap is a joint on show. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

06

What do I need to sort out first?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. The panel takes its height off the steel. Any socket you intend to move must be moved and re-plastered before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece of stone. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Full height is decided before fabrication, not after.

07

Do you quote Greenhill jobs by the square metre?

Material is quoted supply only and templating, fabrication and fitting sit on their own lines, so it is visible which part is stone and which is labour. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. It decides whether the run gets one continuous piece or a set of separate lengths with a joint at every obstruction. Upstands sit tight because both edges are cut.

08

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Panels come off the same slab area as the run.

09

Is a full-height splashback practical in a Greenhill kitchen?

Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. The joint between splashback and worktop is siliconed, never grouted, so it can move a little without cracking. Kitchens in these were fitted as a package to a repeating plan, so the carcasses are identical from flat to flat and so are their faults. Every socket, switch and any USB point has to be cut out of the stone to the actual measured position, so the template has to be taken with the faceplates off and the back boxes visible. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

10

What if something breaks during the fit?

Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. A height barrier on the car park entrance rules out a tail-lift van outright, and the stone then transfers to a trolley at the barrier itself. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. What can be got into the room decides the height above the worktop.
