Yes. Hatch End is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA5. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Drives with a dropped kerb and a tight turn-in take a long van at an angle, and that angle decides which side the tail lift can work from. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The crate spec follows the length of the carry. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.

Many were built with a solid sub-floor to the rear rooms, so the kitchen floor is concrete and level while the front of the house is suspended timber. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. The fall across the floor is in the cut list. Casement handles and stays swing down into the space above the worktop, so the clearance that counts is the one measured with the window open. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. The mitre is cut to the angle we found, not to ninety.

Bollards, planters and a one-way service road can turn what looks like a ten-metre carry into a fifty-metre one. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Nothing leaves the bench longer than the way in allows. Where the drive is too short for the van the back end overhangs the footway, and a footway is a route people are using rather than spare space. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. We pack for the tail lift we are actually going to use.

One of the three we are asked for most, although worktop installation is asked for more. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Spares crated with the batch and labelled by unit. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

A corbel on show under an overhang is a decision about how the piece looks from a stool, so it gets settled alongside the edge profile rather than left to whoever fits it. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Seams land over gables, never over a void. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.

A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Upstands leave the bench in lengths, not as one run. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Appliance changes after nesting are a new piece.

No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. What the wall does is on the drawing before the saw runs.

Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Suspended timber floors flex underfoot, and anything that moves beneath a unit shows up later as a lipped join. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Drainer grooves are machined flat, on a bed, never on site.

A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A downdraught extractor takes a long slot out of the middle of the piece and a motor housing out of the cabinet below it, so what sits under the top is settled before anything is cut. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. One setting serves both halves of a mitre.

Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. A remake is the price of guessing that measurement.
