On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Edge profiles are finished before the stone is ever stood on end. The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. A long walk from the van earns heavier corner protection.

Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Oversize on the scribe edge, always. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Appliance changes after nesting are a new piece.

Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The radius goes in at the bench, not on site.

Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. Boxed-in pipework running along the skirting looks harmless until a loaded trolley has to pass it. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. The cut list answers to the way in first.

On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Floors are a sand and cement screed over concrete, laid fast and worn since, so they are hard, solid and seldom flat. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Every piece is numbered to the wall it belongs against.

An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. A U puts the sink in one leg, the hob in another and any drainer grooves in whatever is left, which spreads the cut-outs about but does not reduce the machining time. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The overhang is cut with its support already sized.
