Hillingdon kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s Metroland semiinterwar detachedHillingdon Village older stock

These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.

Classic Metroland semis with a rear kitchen and an attached side garage. The recurring job is the garage converted into a utility or boot room, which needs a matching secondary run alongside the main kitchen. The A4020 Uxbridge Road is the only real delay on the way in. Broad avenues, drives everywhere and quick access from the A40.

The kitchen is usually a rear room extended into the garden, with the original external wall now standing inside the run. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn.

What we are usually templating in is 1930s Metroland semi, interwar detached and Hillingdon Village older stock. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

1930s and inter-war semis

Getting stone into the room

A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop fabrication do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

1930s and inter-war semis

The building, and what it does to the job

Garage conversions need a second smaller top in the same material, so order it with the kitchen or the batch numbers will not match.

1930s and inter-war semis

True everywhere, stated once

A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Hillingdon

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Hillingdon?

Yes. Hillingdon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB10. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hillingdon. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Hillingdon change how worktop templating works?

Houses of this period came with generous garages and utility rooms, so a second short run of stone is often part of the same job. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. No stone is ever cut from a plan. Garage conversions need a second smaller top in the same material, so order it with the kitchen or the batch numbers will not match.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Hillingdon?

Broad avenues, drives everywhere and quick access from the A40. The A4020 Uxbridge Road is the only real delay on the way in. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Is Hillingdon really a worktop templating area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop fabrication. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Hillingdon kitchens the same size price differently?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
