A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. A steep pitch shortens the tread and lengthens the reach, which leaves whoever is below carrying most of the weight for the full flight. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. A remake is the price of guessing that measurement. Some zones are controlled for a short window in the middle of the day and open either side of it, which makes the timing of the visit the whole question. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The van is packed to suit the walk at the other end.

Once the carcasses are levelled the gap under the plinth varies along the run, and that varying gap is the honest record of what the floor is doing. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. A square internal corner is a crack waiting. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A repeated specification comes off one batch.

The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. No money changes hands before the template. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. Windows sit high and the sill line crosses the middle of the run, which limits what can go above the worktop. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The saw only ever sees the templated dimensions.

Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Long lengths go down first, short pieces fill around them.

They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. The original plan had one sink position, and moving it means taking a waste through a wall that does not want to be cut. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. A piece that needs trimming later was drawn wrong.

Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. A wall line that runs level over a floor that does not means the finish closes up on the plinth at one end, which is joinery rather than something the stone can answer. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. Oversize on the scribe edge, always.
