Hornsey kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Hornsey

A good quote for splashback and upstand work in Hornsey reads like a description of your kitchen rather than a price list, and that is deliberate. A lot of two-bed conversion flats where the kitchen is at the back with a single 2.4m to 3m run and a washing machine under the counter because there is no utility. The newer blocks around the old Town Hall site are open-plan with a compact island and a fully integrated appliance set. Photographs of the run and a rough length are usually enough for us to say which of those you are looking at.

Where the walls have been dry-lined over the old lath there is a void behind the board and no solid fixing until a batten is found. Socket positions, sill heights and wall flatness are the three things that settle this, and all three are properties of the building. A chimney breast breaks a panel run regardless of the drawing.

Winders at the head of each flight are the tightest part of the climb and they are appreciably tighter than the straight run below them. A full-height panel in a chimney recess is templated as a trapezium, since that recess is square in neither direction. A bowed wall is what decides between an upstand and a panel.

The stock we template in here is Victorian terrace, Edwardian flat conversion and 2020s Town Hall quarter apartment. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Edges are polished on every side that shows, including the top edge of an upstand.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.

The place

Why Hornsey is its own job

Because we work across Hornsey rather than one street of it, we know which questions are worth asking up front. The High Street is a constant bus corridor with red-route style restrictions at peak, so timing matters. New blocks need a booked service lift and dust sheets over the lobby finishes; the older conversions have a shared street door and a stair used by three flats. Conversion kitchens here often sit on a solid ground-floor slab that has been overlaid twice - measure finished floor level at both ends of the run, not just at the sink. Both are settled at the template visit and written into the quote, so nothing about the day is discovered on your doorstep.

The work

What worktop splashbacks & upstands involves

What these pieces do is protect the wall where water and heat land: behind the tap, behind the hob, and along the back edge where a cloth never quite reaches. The height is settled first, since a slim upstand and a full sheet up to the wall units are different pieces of work and the wall between them is where the decision shows. You end up with a continuous run of stone from the worktop up, cut from the same slab batch so the colour matches where the two pieces meet.

A full-height sheet must live with everything already on that wall, the extractor and its bracket included, because it is machined to fit round them and cannot be eased afterwards. A window sill sitting lower than the surface settles the argument on its own: the strip runs into the reveal, returns, and the wall above is left alone. Chimney breasts in these kitchens leave a shallow opening where the range once stood, so the strip has to return into it on both sides. Machined to the room, not trimmed to it.

The money

What it costs in Hornsey

Cutting from the same slab run as the worktop is what keeps the colour matched, and ordering the two together is cheaper than ordering them apart. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. Nothing about the £110 to £550 supply range changes once the template is done. What the template settles is the piece count and the operations, and that is where the figure firms up. Same slab run, and the quote says so.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Hornsey in the housing figures

In the streets around Hornsey, the inter-war semi is not the local type, so the rear-addition return that defines those houses is uncommon. Socket and switch positions have to be final before the panel is templated. Returns and reveals set out at finished size.

What Hornsey asks for

We are not going to claim this is the local speciality when the stock says otherwise. Worktop replacement and worktop installation is what these streets actually ask for. The work itself is done exactly the same way.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. A panel cracked on the way in is a full remake, because there is no repairing a polished face close to an edge. Panel size is checked against the tightest point rather than the average one.

Getting stone into a Hornsey kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Hornsey

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Do you cover Hornsey?

Yes. Hornsey is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N8. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Haringey. The van is not staying on a main road for the day, so once the stone is off it goes and parks properly somewhere else. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. They go in with the first load where the stop is short. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.

02

Does the housing in Hornsey change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

Ceilings in the principal rooms are three metres or more, so a full-height panel behind a hob is a taller piece here than the same kitchen would need anywhere else. Lath-and-plaster on the party wall and the chimney breast returns almost never runs true, so a 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer here, it rides the bow and hides the junction the worktop can never close on its own. Dry lining behind a panel needs a fixing plan of its own. Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Height follows the sill, not the plan.

03

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Hornsey?

Whether the stone can stand on end in the car is the first question, because a lift that takes 2.1m upright takes nothing like that lying flat. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. They come in last so nothing is carried past them. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Rushing the last piece off the van is how panels break.

04

Is worktop splashbacks & upstands what Hornsey is known for?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. One conversion drawing repeats its mistakes six times. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Cut now, stored for the next void.

05

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

A waterfall leg is a separate piece bonded to the top on a mitre, so the floor it stands on has to be level enough for that mitre to close along its full height. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Upstands follow the return round the corner. The material band is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

06

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Hornsey?

A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Scribed along the top edge as well. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. Two flats with an identical layout can want entirely different things from the same run of worktop, which is why the quote follows the run rather than the address. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. The wall trade answers to a different budget.

07

What if something breaks during the fit?

Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. Goods lifts and passenger lifts fail differently: one has a rated load that matters, the other has a door aperture that matters more. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Suction lifters take a panel where hands cannot get a grip.

08

Is removal and disposal included on a Hornsey job?

Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. Full-height panels are the awkward thing to move, light enough to lift and long enough to flex on the way. Two hands and a clear route, or it waits on the van.

09

When do I pay for a Hornsey worktop?

Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. It decides whether the run gets one continuous piece or a set of separate lengths with a joint at every obstruction. The obstruction breaks the length, every time.

10

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. Each cut-out is priced on its own line, so a range, a bowl and a half, a boiling tap and a drainer are four items rather than one. It is the heaviest single piece in the kitchen, so the number of hands needed on the day and the route in are worked out from that piece rather than from the runs. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. The hob panel is sized after the extractor, not before.

“Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.”
