A bus lane along the frontage brings its own hours with it, and stopping in one is enforced the same way the red route is. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. What comes off first is settled before the doors shut. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.

These flats have been reconfigured more than once, so the kitchen often sits in what was a bedroom with services run a long way to reach it. These have a back door straight into the kitchen so getting pieces in is rarely the issue, but the room is small and the runs are short, which puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on a single length of stone. The bow in an old wall is cut for, not sanded out. The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Oversize on the scribe edge, always.

A short run of external steps before the communal door means a piece is lifted twice before the staircase proper has even started. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. A remake is the price of guessing that measurement. The van is not staying on a main road for the day, so once the stone is off it goes and parks properly somewhere else. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load sheet carries the parking note with it.

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The radius goes in at the bench, not on site. Final appliance positions and the actual sink and hob need to be settled before machining, because on a run this short a few centimetres of movement decides whether the piece can be cut in one. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A repeated specification comes off one batch.

A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. No money changes hands before the template. On the fitting day floors and door frames are protected, joins clamped flush, sink and hob sealed. A boiler hangs on the wall above the run in most of these, and its pipework drops exactly where a splashback wants to go. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The awkward corner is cut first, while the slab is whole.

On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. The units stay where they are and only the surface changes. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. Straps and battens are chosen for lifting, not just for transit.

Levelling belongs in the carcasses, on their own legs and packers. Units have to be fixed down as well as levelled. A loose carcass moves under stone. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. A deep relief needs material left behind it.

Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. The notch is machined, never ground in later.
