The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The yard reads the access note before it racks anything. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.

The kitchen is generally a rear extension or a knocked-through pair of rooms, so part of the perimeter is old wall and part of it is new. Access is off a drive and through wide doors, so for once the piece size is not the constraint - the joins that go in are the ones we choose for layout and veining, not the ones the building forces. A scribe of twenty millimetres is machined, not fettled on site. An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Geometry first, then the saw.

Sintered stone at 12mm changes what a staircase can take, because the same run arrives at roughly half the weight of the granite equivalent. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Edge profiles are finished before the stone is ever stood on end. Deep gravel takes the wheels of a loaded trolley and holds them, so either boards go down or the pieces are carried. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. One movement off the van starts with how it went on.

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.

The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. A square internal corner is a crack waiting. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. Where a letting agent sits between us and the owner the approval passes through two sets of hands, so a quote has to be clear enough to forward without a covering explanation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Appliance changes after nesting are a new piece.

No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Oversize on the scribe edge, always.

Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. A piece carried on edge up a flight has to clear the ceiling above the stairs as well as the walls either side of it. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The cut list answers to the way in first.

Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. Where the carry is long the pieces are strapped for handling rather than for the shortest route off the tail lift. Kerbside unloading is planned in the racking, not improvised at the door.

An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. There is a door to the garden, a door to the hall and often a door to a utility, so the perimeter run is interrupted three times. Islands here regularly run longer than a slab, so the join is nested to sit over an internal gable and positioned so it does not run through the hob cut-out, and on a heavily veined stone we nest the island and the back run together so the movement relates across the room. Older houses come off the bench with longer scribes.
