Ickenham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. Proven on the bench, then loaded.
Substantial detached houses with large square kitchens built around a freestanding range cooker, big islands with 40mm or mitred 100mm edges, and a fair amount of full design-led remodelling rather than replacement.
The village core around the pond is conservation-controlled and narrow, but the surrounding estates have wide drives with room to turn. Low bridges on the Metropolitan line approach catch out taller vehicles. Range cookers dictate the aperture, so measure the appliance itself and hold a 3mm gap each side rather than trusting the manufacturer's spec sheet.
A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. What does drive the bench work is the knocked-through kitchen-diner: the return worktop and any peninsula are seen end-on from the dining side, so we nest the pieces so the veining carries across the internal corner in the same direction rather than turning through ninety degrees. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.
The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s Metroland detached, interwar semi, village conservation area cottage and Swakeleys estate house. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

The shape of the run
An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop design & quotation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into a Ickenham kitchen
The village core around the pond is conservation-controlled and narrow, but the surrounding estates have wide drives with room to turn. Low bridges on the Metropolitan line approach catch out taller vehicles.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.
3–7 working days
From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Questions
Worktop fabrication in Ickenham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Ickenham, or just list it?
Yes. Ickenham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB10. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hillingdon. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop fabrication in Ickenham?
The kitchen is usually a rear room extended into the garden, with the original external wall now standing inside the run. Range cookers dictate the aperture, so measure the appliance itself and hold a 3mm gap each side rather than trusting the manufacturer's spec sheet.
Is access a problem in Ickenham?
The village core around the pond is conservation-controlled and narrow, but the surrounding estates have wide drives with room to turn. Low bridges on the Metropolitan line approach catch out taller vehicles. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.
Do you do much worktop fabrication around Ickenham?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Proven on the bench before dispatch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Nested for the job in front of us.
What decides the price of a worktop in Ickenham?
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
