Streets near a ground or a venue have restrictions that come and go with the fixture list rather than with the time of day. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. A one-hour window will not hold a two-way job. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

The addition is one room wide, so the run is a galley with a door at one end and a window at the other and no wall long enough for anything else. On an event day the controls are wider, tighter and enforced harder than the signage suggests on any other morning of the week. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. The strip-out waits until the new stone has somewhere to stand.

The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. The step down from the main house into the addition is commonly a hundred to a hundred and fifty millimetres, which gives the kitchen a different floor datum from the rest of the ground floor. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. The wall behind the old top has not been seen in years.

Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Carcasses stay. Surface changes. That is the whole of it. The practical answer is to check the fixture list before the date is offered, because a template slot lost to a road closure cannot be recovered that week. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. Loading out is loading in, done in reverse and heavier.

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. A downdraught extractor takes a long slot out of the middle of the piece and a motor housing out of the cabinet below it, so what sits under the top is settled before anything is cut. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Appliance gaps are checked against the new thickness.
