Worktop templating in Longbridge

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

Longbridge kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

Where houses have been converted to flats, the kitchens are carved out of former bedrooms with services run along one wall, which produces short runs and a lot of awkward boxing to scribe around.

Some of the better period stock in the borough sits around Barking Park, with larger bay-fronted houses whose original kitchens are big enough to work with once the old scullery wall comes out.

Deep original skirting is often left in behind the units, standing them off the wall, so the back edge of the stone is plotted where the carcasses actually sit. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian terrace, Edwardian bay-fronted house, inter-war semi and period conversion flat. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Converted flats have boxed-in soil stacks in the corner of the kitchen almost as a rule, so we template around the boxing rather than trusting the wall line.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop replacement and worktop installation.

Getting stone into the room

Wider roads than central Barking with some off-street parking on the larger houses, but permit bays elsewhere and long stepped front paths on the bay-fronted terraces.

A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The laser records it along with everything else.

Questions

Worktop templating in Longbridge

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Longbridge?

Yes. Longbridge is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG11. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Longbridge change how worktop templating works?

The bay at the front and the back addition at the rear were built to different standards, and the kitchen is nearly always in the weaker of the two. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the laser picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Converted flats have boxed-in soil stacks in the corner of the kitchen almost as a rule, so we template around the boxing rather than trusting the wall line.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Longbridge?

Wider roads than central Barking with some off-street parking on the larger houses, but permit bays elsewhere and long stepped front paths on the bay-fronted terraces. Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is Longbridge mostly worktop templating work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop replacement and worktop installation. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Appliances on site, not on order. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Longbridge kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Plotted, not estimated. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
