The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Marylebone
Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. Levelling is done under the units and not under the stone, so anything out is corrected before a piece is lifted in. One visit, our own installers.
Estate leases restrict altering the layout, so you are usually working to exactly the same run positions as the old top - keep the old worktop as a reference until the new one is in.
Walls are solid brick with lime plaster and a hard skim over the top, and that skim comes away in sheets when old tiles are taken back. The porter has to be booked, the goods lift protected with the block's own blankets or our own boards, and communal carpet and stair runners covered from the entrance to the flat door before a single piece moves. Old floors get packed, not argued with.
Locally the mix runs to Georgian estate townhouse, Edwardian mansion block and medical-building conversion. What the units are screwed to varies between them, and that decides the fixings.
Access. Portered mansion blocks with a set of house rules - works hours typically 9 to 5 weekdays only, no weekends, lift protection mandatory, and the porter controls when you can bring materials through the front hall. Original lift cars will not take a full slab.
There is nothing to visit in Marylebone. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
