Monks Orchard kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Joins over gables, always.
A quiet mixture of post-war semis with standard 3m rear kitchens and newer cul-de-sac housing with open-plan kitchen-diners and small islands. The newer developments come with cabinets already fitted and only the tops changed.
Cul-de-sacs and turning heads make loading straightforward, though several of the newer schemes have parking courts behind the houses and bollards that stop a van reaching the front door. Parking courts on the newer schemes mean a 40-metre carry with a corner, so the pieces get sized for two people rather than four.
A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. The notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius, because a square internal corner there is where a top fails. The bench proves it before the van moves.
The buildings themselves are mostly post-war estate semi, 1930s detached, 1970s cul-de-sac housing and modern gated development. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Getting stone into the room
Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it.

True everywhere, stated once
Fabrication is where access quietly becomes a design decision. How the stone reaches the room decides how big each piece can be, and therefore how many joins the kitchen ends up with.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop fabrication in Monks Orchard
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Monks Orchard?
Yes. Monks Orchard is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR0, BR3. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Monks Orchard change how worktop fabrication works?
The internal stair is usually a straight flight with a tight top landing, and it is the landing rather than the flight that is the limit. Walls in the system-built blocks are concrete or panel and can bow noticeably over the length of a run, so the template picks up the real line and we cut the back edge to follow it rather than trimming on site with a grinder. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Parking courts on the newer schemes mean a 40-metre carry with a corner, so the pieces get sized for two people rather than four.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Monks Orchard?
Cul-de-sacs and turning heads make loading straightforward, though several of the newer schemes have parking courts behind the houses and bollards that stop a van reaching the front door. The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. It is settled on the bench, not on site.
Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Monks Orchard?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Same slab run, or it is not a match. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Nested for the job in front of us.
Why do two Monks Orchard kitchens the same size price differently?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. The approved drawing is the instruction.
