Norbiton kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Norbiton

What splashback and upstand work actually involves in Norbiton depends on what you are fitting into, and around here that is not one thing. Modest Victorian and Edwardian terraces with rear kitchens of about 2.4m by 3m, commonly opened into the dining room to give an L of 3m and 1.8m, alongside estate flats where the job is a straight replacement of a 2m run and upstands. Bring us the problem rather than the diagnosis. Working out what you have got is the first thing we do.

Suspended timber floors flex underfoot, and anything that moves beneath a unit shows up later as a lipped join. Socket positions, sill heights and wall flatness are the three things that settle this, and all three are properties of the building. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.

The kitchen occupies the ground floor of the addition with a garden door at the far end, so there is a second way in that is narrower than the front door and a great deal shorter. Lath-and-plaster on the party wall and the chimney breast returns almost never runs true, so a 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer here, it rides the bow and hides the junction the worktop can never close on its own. Panels expose a wall; upstands forgive one.

Around here the stock is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, 1960s and 1970s council estate and 2020s estate regeneration. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Edges are polished on every side that shows, including the top edge of an upstand.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.

The place

Why Norbiton is its own job

A firm that has not worked in Norbiton tends to find out about the access on the morning of the fit, which is too late to change anything. Terraced streets with permit bays and heavy hospital traffic nearby, no off-street parking on most roads, and rear access via a shared alley that is usually blocked by bins. Knocked-through terraces leave a stub of chimney breast mid-run, so the top gets scribed around a pier rather than running straight. It goes on the drawing, you agree the drawing, and the workshop cuts to that. Nothing is decided on the day.

The work

What worktop splashbacks & upstands involves

The decision belongs to the quotation stage rather than to the week after the kitchen is finished, because the stone for the wall is taken from the worktop order rather than bought again. The height is settled first, since a slim upstand and a full sheet up to the wall units are different pieces of work and the wall between them is where the decision shows. You end up with a joint that stays closed. It is siliconed rather than filled hard, so the wall and the surface can move against each other without opening a crack.

A full-height sheet must live with everything already on that wall, the extractor and its bracket included, because it is machined to fit round them and cannot be eased afterwards. Height is taken from the finished surface up to the underside of the wall units, so a stretch with nothing above it has no obvious answer and gets asked about. A rear extension often puts the sink under a window whose sill is barely clear of the surface, and that settles the height before anyone gets a say. Cut from the slab the worktop came out of.

The money

What it costs in Norbiton

It is priced as its own item so you can see what removing the grout line actually costs before deciding. One continuous L takes more slab than its metreage implies, because the waste sits inside the angle. Material is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, with the batch and the slab size sitting behind that variation, and the workshop time quoted apart from it. Height is a decision with a figure against it.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

What Norbiton asks for

A leaseholder paying for their own kitchen inside managed stock still needs the freeholder to consent, and that consent is about the building and the common parts rather than about the worktop. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Committed early or dropped early, not left open.

The housing on this patch does not throw up much of this. It throws up worktop replacement and worktop installation. When it does come up, it gets the same template, the same bench and the same crew.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. Upstands are scribed along their top edge as well as their bottom, which is slower than it looks and is the reason they sit tight. A breast return is scribed on three edges.

Access

Getting stone into a Norbiton kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

5–10 working days

From template to fitted is 5–10 working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Norbiton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Which postcodes do you cover around Norbiton?

Yes. Norbiton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT1, KT2. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Plenty of zones run at the weekend as well as through the week, so a Saturday date is not automatically the easier one to work. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. That is why they are crated the way they are. You never have to visit anything or collect anything: we template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen.

02

Why would worktop splashbacks & upstands in Norbiton be any different from anywhere else?

The chimney breast has almost always been taken out of the kitchen with the stack left standing above it, so that bay of wall is newer plasterwork on a different plane. A 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer where the plaster bows, because it rides what a tall panel exposes. What the wall can take decides how tall the stone goes. The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Set it proud on a subframe and the gap becomes deliberate.

03

What is the carry like in Norbiton?

A side gate hung to open outward against a fence post is narrower in use than it measures, and lifting the gate off its hinges is usually the quickest win on the route. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Break positions are chosen for the carry. A permit covering the street is permission to park rather than a space reserved on it, and on a full street the difference is the whole morning. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. Long panels and long carries do not mix.

04

Does Norbiton actually ask for worktop splashbacks & upstands?

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Cut with the tops while the batch is open. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Cut as a set, so one can replace another.

05

Where does the money go on a Norbiton worktop?

An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.

06

What needs to be ready before you come to Norbiton?

Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. An upstand rides what a panel exposes. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. Planned programmes run several kitchens in sequence, so template, fabrication and fitting move as a rolling operation and one uncollected key holds up more than one flat. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The tops and the wall are rarely one approval.

07

Is templating a separate visit from fitting?

The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. No money changes hands before the template. Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. The flatter the wall, the taller the stone.

08

The floor in my Norbiton kitchen slopes. Does that matter?

Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. Level is checked at the template, which is the point of measuring in the room rather than off a drawing. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail.

09

What happens to the worktop that comes off?

Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. The units stay where they are and only the surface changes. Where the household has used up the visitor permits it gets for the year, the remaining options are a suspension or a paid bay and both belong on the quote. Full-height panels are the awkward thing to move, light enough to lift and long enough to flex on the way. Off the van last, and never in a hurry.

10

What happens if a piece will not go up the stairs?

Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. A piece travels on edge, never flat, because on edge is how stone of that length carries its own weight. Where the garden is level and the back door is wide the pieces get staged outside on trestles and brought in one at a time as the fitters are ready for them. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. A tall panel cannot be tilted to clear a turn, so it is sized not to need to.
